Variable-mu compressors are classic mixing and mastering tools known for their smooth, tube-based analog compression, ideal for gluing mixes together without heavy saturation or altering the original sound. The term variable-mu (or vari-mu) refers to variable gain, achieved using vacuum tubes as attenuators in the gain-reduction circuit rather than for amplification.

These compressors are program-dependent, meaning their compression ratio increases as input signal amplitude rises, resulting in a soft-knee compression curve. This design, combined with typically slow attack and release times, creates smooth, cohesive dynamics, making vari-mu compressors highly valued for mastering and submix applications.

The compressor features a dual output design: a tube and Carnhill transformer-balanced path with an IRON PAD for saturated tone, and an electronically balanced output for cleaner, more transparent delivery. Independent input and output controls allow for accurate gain staging and flexible tonal shaping.

A dedicated THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) control lets you fine-tune the harmonic content?from subtle analog warmth to bold coloration. A built-in tube saturation stage enhances signal depth and presence directly within the compression path.
