WD Ultra External HDD Overview
Expand the storage on your Mac and back up photos, video, music, and documents using the silver 2TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive from WD. This drive is equipped with 2TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your Mac doesn't have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Mac, it comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, and Sierra. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable HFS+ driver for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Windows compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

WD Ultra External HDD Reviews
Setting Up My Passport Ultra for Mac
There was essentially no instruction on how to connect the external drive to my Mac. I had to search and search to find the connection instructions in the System Settings/General/Time Machine file.
Reliable enough, but a bit slow
I have had this portable drive for a few months now, and use it weekly for my photography needs from editing to storing images. Although it is not terribly fast (which is why I am now moving onto an SSD), I do not have issues with editing images from the hard drive and loading time for me is no issue. I have also traveled with this hard drive securely tucked in my backpack and I have not run into any issues with the reliability of the files being readable when I plug my hard drive back in. I have found that after editing images off of the hard drive, in order to prevent the hard drive from "being removed without ejecting (and potentially corrupting files), I have to make sure Photoshop is fully closed (command+Q) and I relaunch Finder, followed by ejecting the hard drive. I only say this because I had a near scare moment where I tried to open some files and they were supposedly corrupted, but luckily after shutting off my laptop, unplugging the hard drive, and then turning on my laptop to see if the files could be read again they were all there.
No Support
Horrendous lack of instructions, including online. Supposed to install Acronis True Image but detects Acronis home security. No support item, chat or telephone support.
Failed in the first month
This is my third 2TB Passport HDD and the second HDD to fail. The first one lasted less than a year, the second died in less than a month. It was a major hassle to get a return authorization for the first failed drive, the second was a breeze. Perhaps WD knows they're shipping some bad product... The first replacement has been working for several months now; I'm hoping the second replacement will also prove reliable.
'Specifications' remarkably uninformative (!?!)
Nowhere to be found: RPM, cache and SATA specifications. 'Full Specifications' lacks this centrally relevant info and not even the extra effort of downloading the 'Data Sheet' rewards with any more hard facts on these drives. Have WD lost faith in their customers ability to make sound judgements hence decided to not burden the world with the dry facts?
great drive
Bus powered small drive. No complaints.
Avs
Very good
5TB My Passport ext. hard driv
Great hard drive for quick backups & editing. Long lasting life, usually some last not even a year before hugging out. I've got 3 & they are treating me well for the time being.
