Tilta MB-T16 Overview

Built rugged for daily use on your camera rig yet lightweight for handheld, gimbal, stabilizer, or drone work, the Tilta Mirage VND Kit is a modular component system that clips onto 95mm OD lenses. The included variable ND system allows you to precisely adjust the ND effect from 0.3 to 2.7 stops when needed. The matte box weighs about the same as a standard 4 x 5.65" glass filter, and it accepts Tilta's 95mm round filters with the included filter adapter. The modular design means you can configure the matte box to match your needs on a shot-by-shot basis.
The included rigid hood and removable top flag aid in cutting glare and protecting your image from overhead flares. Four included lens adapters enable mounting the Mirage Matte Box on lenses with 67, 72, 77, or 82mm threaded fronts. The included 15mm LWS rod clamp can be attached, allowing you to mount the Mirage on rods to take the weight off your lens or use lenses with rotating fronts. An optional 4 x 5.65" stackable filter holder lets you mount 4 x 5.65" filters on the matte box. Other modular components, such as a top flag, dual circular filter tray, filter protector, and rubber hood for shooting up against windows, are available separately.

Tilta MB-T16 Reviews
I love it
Good quality
It's actually pretty great.
It's lightweight and the price is great for the base mattebox. I didn't go for the electronic control, I just bought the mattebox and the VND. I thought it would pair well with my fx3, but it spends most of its time on my fx6. It's light, which is nice, and simple to use. Because my fx6 has internal ND, I haven't gotten much use out of the VND yet, but the mattebox itself, in my opinion, is smaller and feels more solid than the one I bought from smallrig.
Perfect for lightweight setups
Of all the matte boxes I've owned, this is by far my favorite. I don't use them for filtration as much as for light control and lens protection. This fits my ZCam + DZO Pictor setup extremely well. The only knock I can find on it is that unless you're using lens support or a locking style mount/adapter, wind causes it to vibrate a fair bit.
A bonus for the BGH1
Just added this matte box to my cinema rig. It's light, compact and robust. The features of the matte box alongside Tilta's M series system is a game changer. For the price, it's a no brainer. Get the matte box!
Best Cheap Mattebox
This mattebox caught me by surprise I originally wasn't a fan of their filter system due to the proprietary 95mm circular filters. When Vaxis released their lineup of filters, they were very tempting when looking at price and quality. I picked up a set of IRND and they feel great using with this mattebox. I think overall, the mattebox is well built. I like that it is modular and you can add more filter trays or 4x5.65 trays. My only complaint is the mattebox comes default with a circular tray that holds one filter. Tilta sells a dual tray that holds two. It is a no brainer to go for the dual tray and Tilta should have made it default come with the mattebox. I love the sleek design and colour choice they use. I would definitely recommend someone to buy this mattebox.
You're crazy to invest into any other Matte Box system.
Tilta hit it out-of-the-park with this one. I can't recommend it enough. The modularity is insane. You can use all of your old filters plus take advantage of the very affordable Vaxon filters. No compromises here. Even you al you can afford is the $119 one, go for the Mirage!
a great value, with some limitations
Overall, I am quite pleased with the Mirage. The build quality, light weight and compact size make it very portable and easy to manage. The screw on adapters to which the matte box attaches is an extra step, but eliminates the need for a rail system. The VND is easy to adjust, and the color cast can be minimized with a custom white balance after mounting the VND (which I do with all ND and VND filters anyway). I do wish the design took into account the vignette issue with multiple filters, as I often shoot wider than 35mm. For a single filter use, the Mirage hasn't caused any issues, but I've read that the stackable circular tray will vignette with lenses wider than 35mm. Bummer.... I was excited that I can use my screw-on filters with the matte box, but somewhat disappointed they can't be used simultaneously with the circular filter holder. I was hesitant to invest in propriety circular filters, but their initial cost is quite low compared to rectangular filters. I just hope Vaxis keeps producing them in the event that I break one. They currently offer a good range of IRND filters, and a couple specialty filters. The 1/8 mist filter is very subtle, so I will order a 1/4 mist for stronger effect. It seems that a bit of additional depth and width could have fixed both these issues. That said, for situations that don't require wider shots, the light weight of the Mirage and cost effective Vaxis filters make this a good value. If it weren't for the vignetting issue and inability to use my screw-on filters with a circular filter, I would give the SIX stars.
Amazing build
