Tiffen Soft FX Overview
The Tiffen 77mm Soft/FX 2 Filter can be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.
This filter has a grade of 2. Grades of 1/2, 1, 3, 4, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.
This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Tiffen Soft FX Reviews
Great filter
It perfect.. gives a nice look. I think the soft/fx1 would be better (only because the highlights bloom alot with this) but this is a way to go to soften your footage/image.
You need to open the aperture
I've used the filter on a Sony EX1. My experience is that you must open the aperture to 8 preferably 5.6 or more open or else the filter pattern is to be seen. The result is good if you use the filter with a little caution. The filter can not quite place behind the standard lens hood on the EX1. You have to grind away a mm from the metal in the filter.
Good as a Softar with less halation
I've been using these for years instead of Zeiss Softars because besides being much cheaper, they do the same job with less halation so I'm able to use them outside with backlight without problems. The quality of the metal ring was never impressive, but I just ordered a new one and the ring was much thinner than the older ones and nicely machined.
Nice effect for video interviews.
I bought the filter for use with a Sony PMW-EX1 video camera. I use it primarily for interviews and find that it gives a nice soft look.
