The Heat Company Softshell Overview
Keep your hands warm and dry even in the harshest conditions with these Heat 2 Softshell Mittens/Gloves from The Heat Company. When you're out in the cold, conserve heat by using the outer mitten, and then when you need to do some work, get a drink, snap a selfie, or perform any task that requires dexterity, just fold the mitten and thumb back to expose your fingers. Magnets hold the folded-back finger and thumb covers out of the way.
Your first layer of protection from the elements is a wind- and water-resistant mitten shell with Thinsulate insulation. The palm is reinforced with soft and durable goatskin which is naturally water and wear resistant. Extra-long knitted cuffs keep heat in and snow or wind out. Loops at the fingers of the glove make it easy to tug off. To find your correct size, measure the circumference of the palm of your hand at its widest point, just below the fingers. This size 7 glove equates to a hand circumference of 5.9-7.1".

The Heat Company Softshell Reviews
These are keepers.
I have bought 3 different pairs of gloves from 3 different manufacturers, this was the last pair I bought and I will not need to try any others. The fit is great, the pulls between the fingers is very helpful, the magnets are strong but not too strong, cuffs are long and as I said, warm but not sweltering, no need to shop further.
Great for birding in winter
It's always a pleasant surprise when everything works as advertised. I bought these gloves for birding in cold weather. I use them with thin merino wool glove liners, and a hand warmer packet in the mitten top half. That all seems to work down to about 35 F, 2 C, for a couple of hours. Due to climate change and unseasonal temperatures I have not been able to test them to lower temperatures. The flip-off covers are reasonably easy to use, with exposed fingers. With the covers up, it takes a few seconds longer, but not a deal breaker. The four-finger cover is easier to use than the thumb cover. If it's not super cold, I compromise by keeping the left hand completely covered, and the right hand uncovered. When open, the magnets keep them in place securely, with no flopping around, and completely unnoticeable. They definitely don't look as goofy as in the pictures :-) and you should be looking at your subjects and not your mittens anyway. A note about sizing: The Heat Co's sizing chart assumes you use no glove liner or thin ones. If you want to use thick liners, like their Polartec Wind Pro liners, go up at least one size, or better yet, measure your hand with the thick liners on!
Good quality, not as warm as hoped for.
I spend long hours out photographing wildlife during the winter in Michigan, and needed a new pair of gloves/mittens. The mittens arrived quickly and appear well made. Like the strings between the fingers to help pull them off. I ordered size nine based on their sizing recommendations , but they are just a bit too tight in the fingers, esp. with the very thin liners I wear. For my use in the Michigan winter, they are comfortable down into the upper 20s, but even with hand warmers in the flip back mit, my hands got quite cold when the temps got into the teens.
Iffy in Extreme Cold
Great for regular cold weather, but on those few days in January, when it dips down to -22F (-30C), these gloves couldn't keep my hands warm. Thankfully those temperatures only come for a few days during the winter. In regular cold, these are snug, warm and work great.
Kept my hands warm in 35 degree weather.
These worked for my. Usually my hands are cold in any glove short of a ski glove. Love the dexterity I have to take photos.
Awesome gloves
I got these for my brother as a gift and he loves them. He just took a winter photography trip to the national parks in Utah and he said they kept his hands very warm when it was well below freezing temperatures. He only used the hand warmer pocket once when it was 6F and it worked well. The flaps were easy to open and close. He thinks they would be great for many uses in addition to photography outings.
Excellent
Great product! I've owed other pairs and these are the best. They thought of everything.
They work great with liners
These gloves provide more insulation than I was expecting based on how thin they are. I can photograph comfortably for hours in temps slightly below freezing when wearing these mittens with thin glove liners and inserting hand warmers in the pocket of the finger cover. I typically close one or both mittens every 5-15 minutes, depending on the temperature, to warm up my finger tips, and I open the thumb cover as needed. The cuffs do a good job of keeping drafts out from between the mittens and coat sleeves, the loops between fingers are useful for taking the mittens off, and the magnets do a good job of holding the finger and thumb covers out of the way when folded back. Probably a bit overpriced for what you are getting, but these mittens with thin warmers is the best solution I've found for cold weather photography after years of trying different products and combinations.
