Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 DI III Reviews
Simple and inexpensive moderate wide lens for travel.
This is a great and inexpensive lens for street and landscape photography. I own a full line of GM lenses, but for my light travels I'm using only SONY 24-105 G Lens and Tamron 20-40mm. This set covers 80% of my travel photo needs. In some trips, that don't require a lot of walking, I'm replacing 24-105mm with Tamron 35-180mm and that is my ideal travel set. Since I got the Tamron 20-40mm, it has become my must have lens when traveling.
Wonderful walk around lens
I had the Sony 40mm f/2.5 and used that as a light walk-around lens but found I often wanted wider - so I purchased this Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 and found while it is a few ounces heavier and somewhat longer than the Sony, it is still very lights and compact and gives me the flexibility of going wider than 40mm. Sold the Sony and never looked back as to using the Tamron for easy street photography.
Works great with AF on Sony A7IV
I chose the 20-40mm Tamron lens as the full-frame next step up to be a companion to my current 11-20mm APS-C Tamron on my Sony a7IV for in-studio talking-head videos. With my range of 11-40mm now I have all the wide-angles covered. It is quite fast with the Sony AF, matches my current 67mm diam lens, and the light weight makes mounting variations easy. It was a good buying decision.
The perfect Gimbal Lens for Wedding Work
In my opinion this is the perfect lens for my Sony FX3 camera for wedding gimbal work. I was never a fan of the 16mm look so having 20 to 40mm is a game changer for me. Quality of this lens is good. If you are looking for a lens with some kind of character or look this is not the lens for you. The image is simple. AF is good enough for my work and the weight of the lens is perfect. Again for my kind of work I think this lens is perfect.
Versatile Wide Angle Lens
Con: No Aperture Ring - No I.S. (Note: Can't have all these features for the Price). Pro: Price is right- Sharp I.Q.- Good auto focus- Weather Sealed. Most of all at F/2.8... You have all the most popular wide angle lenses in One.
Quick evaluation
I typically shoot with a super telephoto, but got this lens to accommodate those times when I want to capture a stunning vista and my 100-400mm just won't cut it. WIth that said, I've used this very little as of yet but I'm very happy with the results so far and will continue to evaluate its capabilities in the near future. This lens has a short zoom span, but just enough to feel and perform like a prime which is what I want. Prior to buy it, I expected that my new smart phone would serve as a good stand-in for a wide angle, but the phone hasn't lived up to the hype and therefore my need for a real wide angle.
This is the lens you want!
Great focal length, great I Q, great size and weight. I'm surprised it took so long to have a lens with this coverage. For the price, you can't beat this option.
Great for what it is for
Compact size, lightweight, affordable. There is no real con for this lens if you know what you are getting. Sure I wish it goes to 50mm. I wish it is internal zoom. Overall great lens for gimbal video work. If one day someone come out a 20-50 f2.8 or something faster like 20-50 f2-2.8, I will definately upgrade.
