Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DI III-A Overview
The 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD from Tamron is a versatile superzoom ideal for photographers who want an all-rounder that covers virtually any shooting situation. Characterized for its 16.6x zoom ratio and a minimum focus distance of only 5.9", it brings the best of Tamron's "all-in-one" philosophy to the FUJIFILM X audience at large. A fast and precise autofocus mechanism, Tamron's VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, provides it with some of the best performance in its class, and it's aided by the proprietary Vibration Compensation system that supports stable photography even at ultra-telephoto focal lengths.
- All-in-one zoom, engineered specifically for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras, provides a 27-450mm equivalent focal length range.
- Tamron's Vibration Compensation uses a free-floating element, controlled through two gyroscopic sensors to measure the horizontal and vertical vibrations and compensate accordingly, eliminating camera shake.
- Two VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors deliver impressively quiet, quick, and precise focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system offers a minimum focusing distance of 5.9' when fully zoomed out, and a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio at the wide end of the zoom range.
- A weather-sealed construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions

Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DI III-A Reviews
This lens is just what I wanted
I am getting old and weight has become an issue. I still love traveling and photography. I have a Sony A 6500. I bought this lens to go with that camera. The combination is terrific. I did notice that at 300 mm some of the edges were not as sharp as I would like. But the solution is easy, adjust the shutter priority to a higher value. I tend to do that anyway because I am shooting from a boat or the target is moving. I highly recommend this lens.
Exceeded My Expectations
Amazing performance at this price point. Using on my Sony a6000 and Very pleased at the images captured. Integrates well with the camera's systems, lens vibration reduction works well.
Sharp even at 300mm!
I'm always looking for a good, all-in-one zoom to handle everything from landscapes to wildlife. For my Sony A6500s, that pretty much meant the 18-135, because I didn't want to spend a lot of money on camera bodies that are, while still great, 2 iterations removed from current (surpassed by the A6400 and A6600). I bought this lens eager to test it out on a bunch of different subjects, and wow did it exceed my expectations! I expected it to be sharp at the wide and mid-ranges of the zoom (see shot of courthouse shot at 31mm), but to capture sharp images of birds in flight at 300mm? Yeah. Nailed it! (See pelican image). It does not have Vibration Reduction (Tamron's name for image stabilization), but you won't really need it for landscapes, especially if shooting from a tripod, or birds-in-flight, as you shouldn't use VR for those anyway (it degrades tracking performance unless you use a more expensive lens with tracking IS/VR). Is this lens as sharp as my RF70-200L f/4 or RF100-500L? No! But those lenses are both significantly more expensive and, in the case of the RF100-500L, much heavier, too! I see this Sony A6500 + Tamron 18-300 combo as a perfect second camera to use with my Canon R5 and RF100-500L, giving me the wide angle coverage the 100-500 lacks while being light enough to carry with that bigger system. And some days, even good enough to carry all by itself!
Not for me
I ordered this lens with some guarded optimism hoping it might replace my 18-135mm as a single lens solution for travel. Unfortunately after trying two samples it was clear to me this lens simply would / could not be as good as the Fuji glass, because of the compromises made in such a super zoom. I bought it based on some good initial reviews, including some here stating it was sharper than the 18-135mm. Expectations were not very high, but figured a few missed photos and overall softer picts would be a fair trade off to carrying an additional lens on vacation. Many of us came to Fuji for their bodies and ergonomics but it really was the wonderful glass, be primes or zooms that made us stay. To that end, the Tamron was a big disappointment in my book and I will not bother acquiring a 3rd sample. The sharpness was not even close to my 18-135mm at any point throughout the entire range, VC is not adequate on the long end under anything other than bright Sun, photos lack pop and are just blah, focus hunts and to me seems slower than any of my other Fuji glass, including the very slow 56mm prime. During a visit to a local botanical garden I asked my wife to use my XT2 my new and "wonderful" Tamron while I used her old Olympus m4/3 system. That subjective "test" did not last very long. She could not get any keepers under the tree canopy. Butterflies and birds, forget about it. To close this out, great effort by Tamron to bring this lens to market and no doubt it will be loved by many to put convenience over quality. I really, really wanted to at least like this lens enough to replace my 18-135mm which is the weakest Fuji lens I have. Not going to happen! The Tamron is not only significantly less sharp, but it also has other inherent issues that makes this a no-go for me. I bought this lens to allow me to take more photos with less gear, instead I got a lens that produced less keepers of lower quality and with more frustration and more bulk. Maybe in a few years a Rev 2 will come out and I will be tempted to give it a try. Until then, I can honestly say when you read the reviews, read between the lines. Everything I've experienced is detailed in many of them, just have to read between the lines since they are in the business of giving "participation awards" not trophies.
Good value.
I purchased the lens for amateur birding photography because my normal lens on my Sony 6300 is the Zeiss 4/16-70, which is just not well suited to such use, as much as I love that lens. I wanted a lightweight and inexpensive telephoto with good reach. The Tamron is just that. The zoom action is not the best in that the force (actually torque) required to zoom varies noticeably from easy to harder to easy as the lens is zoomed from near to far and back. That action suggests a bothersome cheapness to the construction, no doubt a consequence of the light weight and the low cost. I also have yet to get any really sharp pictures with the lens, but that is more than likely due to the difficulty of holding it steady. (I've not yet used a tripod.) The built in stabilization is only so effective. Overall I am happy with the purchase and would buy it again.
Tamron 18 to 300mm
Great lens, the zoom ring is really tight so this lens is more for photography than video. Use this lens during day time on sunny days for best results. The auto focus is great even at 300mm. It is compact light and very well made, I am soo happy with it, highly recommended!!!
Great 'scouting' lens!
Building quality is better than expected. The zoom is very smooth. Great to have the "smart" VC that can sense when its on a tripod - no more switch. I am intending to use it as a 'scouting' lens - test shot to begin to understand the light and setting. Works great for this purpose. See "Foggy Sunrise."
Amazing for outdoor and indoor sports.
No more changing lenses for me:)
