Synology RS4021xs+ Overview
Designed for high throughput and data integrity, the RackStation RS4021xs+ 16-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is a 16-bay, 3 RU storage solution with built-in redundant power that is capable of hosting demanding services involving virtualization, mail, office collaboration, and surveillance, to meet the unique requirements of enterprise environments. This unit has 16 drive bays, each of which natively supports 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs. Should users need to expand the overall capacity of their RS4021xs+, two optional RX1217/RX1217RP expansion units may be used to connect up to 24 additional drive bays, and each unit is connected using an integrated expansion port. The RS4021xs+ can deliver 4K random reads of up to 234,698 IOPS and sequential reads of up to 6258 MB/s.
The RackStation RS4021xs+ is powered by a 2.1 GHz Intel Xeon D-1541 Eight-Core processor, which will allow you to run multiple functions simultaneously. The built-in 16GB of DDR4 ECC RAM, which comes in a 1 x 16GB configuration, will allow quick access to frequently used files and programs and may also be upgraded to a total of 64GB by using a 16GB module in each of the four 288-pin DIMM slots. Also featured are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, which allow it to be connected to external peripherals. Network connectivity is achieved via the two 10 Gigabit Ethernet or four Gigabit Ethernet ports with failover support, which help to provide redundancy in the case that a LAN connection malfunction occurs on one port. In addition, link aggregation helps to increase connection speeds beyond the limits of a single network port or cable. If you're looking to expand this NAS, there are two PCIe Gen 3.0 x8/x8 slots that support network interface cards and M.2 NVMe adapter cards for an SSD cache.
The RackStation RS4021xs+ runs on the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, which helps simplify managing your NAS, as well as accessing and sharing data. A variety of RAID modes are supported, which help provide users with data redundancy, speed, or a combination of both. Supported RAID modes include RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, Basic, and Synology RAID F1. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.
Synology has engineered the RackStation RS4021xs+ to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer three 80 x 80mm fans to help keep the system running cool, the server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard-drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses. The RackStation RS4021xs+ operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack and two AC power cords. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year hardware warranty.

Synology RS4021xs+ Reviews
beware of drive limitations
This could have been a nice machine. But the new policy of Synology about vendor lock hard drives is unfair. I already own 4 rackstations with 80 hard disks. Using Synology drives instead of Seagate Exos Enterprise drives means to threw up 10 000 $ or more. Dell plays that sort of limitation more than ten years ago and it was my main reason to move to Synology. Just two years ago, during their annual public show, Synology had close partnership with both Seagate and Western Digital. Now they rebrand Hitachi drives with a label and a dedicated firmware and add 30% to the list price. For those who have warning messages while using other drives, you can hack a file inside the DSM to remove the locks. Otherwise, you are not able to monitor temperature, bad sectors and so on. Hope this helps.
