Where are the instructions?
I bought this not to raise the mount but to enable more clearance to the tripod legs. This is to minimize changes of running cameras or filter wheels into the legs. As such it works great and feels sturdy. The only slight annoyance is with the current tendency of companies to include zero instructions, leading you to hunt for stuff on the web. Sure, this is not the most complex mechanical assembly ever devised but it is too much to put a sticker on it with a link to their instructions. Even the web instructions are like those from IKEA, pictures with no words. I can't tell if you are supposed to lightly tighten the screw into the mount or torque the h--l out of it so it doesn't come loose later. That would be useful to know.
A good unit
I like the extension. I got it to mount to my pier. The only drawback is that it did not come with the pin required for the mount. I've so far been unable to get the pin but am temporarily improvising with a metric bolt.
Not perfect but what else is out there at this price
I added M6 washers to the 6 M6 screws and upgraded the M6 screws from the 14mm length to 16mm. This works great as long as it stays tight. Before relying on this for your night of imaging be sure to give the top mount-pier-plate center bolt (the one with the handle) a tighten. Right now this is the only piece that is coming lose after every session, probably from carrying the mount/tripod around. There is some to be desired. Look at this part as something you will have to put in a little extra work to keep it functioning correctly.
Works well, with one exception
Very well made piece of equipment. As many have reported, there is nothing to stop the pier from rotating at the bottom where it meets the top of the tripod. I've read that Sky-Watcher now includes a rubber gasket in the latest version of the product, which will fix this issue. Apparently, the one I got from was an older version, so it didn't include this. I made one myself, which was easy to do and fixes this one issue. Now I can leave the setup unattended overnight without worrying that the scope is going to hit the legs of the tripod.
Heavy Duty Tube, Small Screws
The tube is heavy iron and is very rigid however the screws that fasten the tube to the inner plugs are small. Knowing that you have to screw this tube to the mount/ tripod every time you set up I can see how the threads can wear out. A larger screw would be desirable. �s service and shipping is great as usual.
It works but has issues
It does what it is supposed to do but installing it is tricky. The bottom bolt holes don't line up correctly so you'll need to put a spacer between the black plate that comes with the Pier Extension and the tripod. You also have to make sure that whatever you use for a spacer will not allow the pier to move. If you just mount it and don't provide some sort of resistance between the pier and the tripod, your scope can very easily be rotated, on accident, if it is touched. This will throw off your polar alignment etc. The engineers should have thought this one through during the design and test phase. Once you get it installed it works as it should. I went ahead and bolted it to my tripod so it can spin around.
Good Product
This product was very easy to install. Arrived with all that was needed for a full install. Product works great.
It does its job
I needed this in order to prevent my 120mm f/7 refactor from running into a tripod leg when pointed vertically. This does a good job of providing solid support but I have concerns over it's long-term durability. The screws used to hold it all together are not large and I'm not sure how well they will hold up to frequent assembly/disassembly. The screws must be removed to disassemble the mount which increases the risk of loss in the field plus they require a tool to do so.
