Sky-Watcher S11700 Overview
The Sky-Watcher Flextube 200P 8" Collapsible Dobsonian Optical Tube Assembly gives users great performance at a reasonable price. Its large parabolic borosilicate primary mirror is treated with a combination of quartz, titanium, and silicon dioxide that brings its reflectivity to over 94%, with a secondary mirror obstruction of just 6% by area. Unlike traditional Dobsonians that tend to be bulky and unwieldy, the Flextube's patented truss design allows it to retract to just 33" for easier transport and storage, and then extends to 44" for observation.
The large 8" aperture draws in copious amounts of light to resolve deep-sky objects like wispy nebulae and galaxies, while also revealing incredible details of the lunar surface and planetary features. Included are 10 and 25mm 1.25" eyepieces, but the focuser comes with an adapter allowing 2" eyepieces to be used.

- Large 8" aperture is able to resolve dim deep-space objects like wispy nebulae and galaxies
- Fast f/5.9 focal ratio ensures a wide field of view, maximum light throughput
- Long 1200mm focal length helps to produce fast focal ratio and moderate magnification potential
- Collapsible truss system saves space during transport and storage, measuring just 33" when trusses are retracted and extending to 44" when set up
- Borosilicate parabolic primary mirror
- Quartz, titanium, and silicon dioxide mirror coatings bring the reflectivity to 94%
- Resolution: 0.57 arcsec (Dawes Limit), 0.69 arcsec (Rayleigh Limit)
- 48mm secondary diameter mirror; Obstruction: 24% by diameter, 6% by area
- 44.5" eyepiece height when aimed directly overhead at the zenith
- 9.375" (23.81cm) outside tube diameter
- Crayford-style is much more precise than the traditional rack-and-pinion focuser
- Tension control system eliminates gears, resulting in zero backlash for tack-sharp focus on dim objects or objects, like binary stars, that are close together
- 2" diameter holder allows the use of larger eyepieces and imaging systems that provide a wide field of view and long eye relief to make viewing dim and small deep-sky objects more comfortable
- 1.25" diameter nosepiece accepts most standard filters
- 25mm focal length eyepiece produces 48x magnification for wide-field observations, alignment, and viewing lunar surface details
- 10mm focal length eyepiece yields a high 120x power to make detailed observations of specific portions of the sky or for planetary viewing
- 2-to-1.25" reducer allows the use of the more common size eyepieces and accessories
- Low 8x power produces a wide field of view for accurate alignment
- 50mm objective allows users to see dimmer stars for more options during 2-star alignment
- Mounting bracket included
Featuring Teflon bearings for smooth slewing and a patented tension control to lock on the target of your observation, this Sky-Watcher 8" Collapsible Dobsonian Base makes it easy to aim your compatible optical tube assembly. The base assembly is outfitted with Sky-Watcher's proprietary Tension Control Handle to increase or decrease friction between the optical tube and sideboards. This floor-based mount measures 29.5 x 20" and weighs 26.5 pounds.
- Tension Control Handle allows users to add or reduce tension, increasing or decreasing the friction between the optical tube and the sideboards
- Teflon bearings for smooth, easy slewing
- Dimensions: 29.5 x 20"
- Weight: 26.5 pounds

Sky-Watcher S11700 Reviews
Beginner Friendly
I got this telescope, as beginner, to start in star gazing and ECT, I Believe that it's straight forward and has been nicely shipped. I greatly suggest getting a lazer collimator too, because the chance you're getting it un-collimated is very high (Especially if the shipping took long). A negative for this telescope is the dob's building, I'd say that the instructions were very vague and mis-leading, yet you can find a few videos on the internet. All round, very nice veiwing experience and was worth it.
Great service
Excellent service and product
Very good, can be made excellent with user upgrades.
Overall, I recommend it. Get yourself a neutral density moon filter for lunar observing. Pros: - Assembly is straightforward - No-fuss Dobsonian mount only requires an empty patch of land - Setup is quick, easy, and manageable for one person - Collapsible optical tube makes storage easier - Fantastic views of the Moon, Jupiter, and other planets/objects with good collimation and a steady atmosphere - Diagonal correct-image finder scope makes seated viewing and starhopping so much easier Cons: - Finder scope mount is not as tight as I'd like it to be, but this shouldn't be an issue assuming you disconnect it during storage - Collimation screws for the secondary mirror are tiny hex-key set screws, and the included hex wrench is not appropriately sized to fit them. On the third night of use, I managed to strip one. There are replacement collimation knobs available, which I highly recommend. I'd also suggest getting yourself a laser collimator. They're cheap and make the job much easier. A word of advice; hold off on getting new eyepieces or a barlow lens. Yes - they will magnify the object you're looking at - but they will also magnify all of the imperfections. The rotation of Earth will also work against you. At high magnification, things tend to race out of view, requiring you to either carefully track them or constantly reacquire whatever you're observing.
