QNAP TVS-H1688X External HDD/SSD Reviews
Top Level Desktop NAS that Outdoes Many Rackmounts
This unit is an incredible value. ZFS for network storage with ECC memory is exactly what you want. It has a powerful processor that also has embedded graphics. The GPU pass through for VM's works with the current version of QUTS Hero. In case the outdated review saying PCI-E pass-though to virtualization station doesn't work was deterring you and making you look at the 12 bay model, that is no longer valid. It didn't work at launch, but QNAP resolved that. It has several expansion slots, 12x 3.5" bays, 4x 2.5" bays, and 2x NVMe slots, and a dual 10GB NIC out of the box. You can get a small form factor bracket for the NIC and move it to the expansion ports on the other side to free up the full size slot for a GPU or other full size expansion card. I like that the 32GB of RAM is only using 2x 16GB sticks, so you can double or triple your memory without wasting the expensive ECC memory that comes with it. I personally added a 64GB (2x 32GB) kit and have 96GB of ram with a dedicated GPU. It has a power connector included for more power consuming GPU's. It just makes more sense than the 12 bay. You get 4x extra HDD bays and double the RAM. When you go to expand your 12 bay or have to upgrade the RAM, you will realize you should have just bought the 16 bay. You will spend way more on storage than the NAS itself, so it's worth getting a good NAS. The new all flash desktop NAS QNAP recently came out with, the TH-S1290FX (all flash) is the only thing more powerful at the moment in desktop form at the time of writing this. They each have their own uses. The only real downside to this or any QNAP NAS is that they do not have the best support. Synology's support is better, but not great. Synology is also turning in to an "Apple" like anti consumer company, that is trying to force you to use only their hard drives and "official" components.
Virtual Machine PCIe passthrough is missing
I purchased this QNAP NAS because of its reviews and claimed features as a small server box as a ZFS file server, virtual machine host to run Windows & Ubuntu VMs, and its PCI slot for an NVDIA GPU card to be passed through to a VM. In QNAP's videos on this product (TVS-h1688x & TVS-h1288x) and their website they specify that they support PCIe passthrough to VMs. My plan was to use this to run GPU computations from a VM. This will not work with this model, the QNAP TVS-h1688x (the 16 slot model). So if you need PCIe passthrough do not buy this model. However, as itk turns out the cheaper model, QNAP TVS-h1288x, with 12 slots, does support PCIe passthrough. Why? It must be a difference in the motherboard. I contacted QNAP support about this. They admitted that the more expensive model does not support this so it does not support any GPU cards such as NVIDIA even though it has slot and a 500 watt power supply. QNAP's response has been unacceptable. They told me to contact the vendor, , and exchange the product for the TVS-h1288x even though the 30 day return window has passed. feels that they have no responsibility to help resolve this because they do not advertise PCIe passthrough as part of the product even though it is part of the manufacturer's specifications and marketing literature. If you do not need this feature it works well. But if you do, you will be severely disappointed. I upgraded the box to 96GB of RAM with the intent of using this box as a compute engine with GPU capabilities. Do not buy it if this capability is something that you need. Also take into consideration the divergence between QNAP's descriptions, claims, and reality along with the type of response that I got from QNAP support. I would be happy if they simply supplied what they describe in their technical & marketing materials or at least made me whole either by exchanging the machine or saying that this capability will be available in the next software update. Instead they simply ignore the problem.
FAST Storage for Days and DAYS and DAYS!
This is a great unit, new NAS for me and it was super easy to setup and transfer videos and other storage items that I have on other NASs. I have populated both M.2 with NVME 980 Pros, 4 SSDs and 8 12 Tb Iron Wolf Pro drives. All were installed with out using screws and just the drive sleds. Its fast and easy to set up shares and limit access to those files if needed.
Go big or go home?
I am using this NAS for home use. I originally was going to get the h1288x but if you upgrade the RAM from 16gb to 32gb on the h1288x it's actually more than just getting this h1688x to start with, so I got this with all the extra bays. I really wanted the smaller form factor of the 1288x but it seemed silly to pay more for the smaller NAS (after upgrading the RAM). This NAS is working fantastically so far. I set this up on ZFS and it does use about 1/3 of the RAM as overhead for the ZFS file system, but no complaints or issues getting everything up and running. I filled up only half of the bays and loaded up 2 samsung SSDs for read caching. The transfer speed on the 10g into my 10g switch has been a huge upgrade compared the the previous 1G NAS I had. Additionally, I immediately set up several docker containers and various VMs for gaming and other purposes. This is where the additional RAM has been great. Compared to using Synology I like the QNAP interface as it is more similar to running a Windows PC. Overall I would highly recommend.
Fails Regularly, qnap will not support
Drops connection regularly and qnap will not support. Qnap removed installed apps critical to functionality, does not tell you it was removed, and then wont support it. There is no way to contact Qnap for urgent matters. Phone lines always have and error and online tickets take 2 to 3 days for response and they wont address the actual issues. If their device is the actual issue they will close the ticket and not do anything to resolve it. Horrible company I will never trust any of my files or network to them again.
