Promise Technology R8 External HDD Reviews
Exceptional Performance
This is the Second Promise Pegasus I've purchased. Exceptional quality and speed all around. Very stable as well. On my fourth year with my original Pegasus 2 and it still works flawlessly. Very impressed. Costs a bit more but worth it in my estimation
Rock solid performer
Had problems with the OWC Thunderbolt 3 soft raid RAID units with Catalina. I returned it and got this unit. It's awesome. fast and quiet. Perfect for my 4k video editing.
Big storage at a reasonable price.
Moving from still photos into video necessitated additional storage. I have this connected via Thunderbolt 3 to a 2019 MacPro and it seems very efficient. It is easy to connect and configure, basically plug it in and use it, but the Promise utility allows you to make changes as you need. I have been using Promise disk arrays for many years and this version seems just as reliable.
Plug and play
When it came time to address my (appalling) storage situation, Promise was the first product line that came to mind. I've had a Pegasus2 R6 on my desk at work for years, and it has been rock solid. The appeal of the Pegasus32 is the USB interface. My home work station has no Thunderbolt, and I don't have the pocket to purchase a new tower this year. After doing a little research, I chose the Sonnet Allegro USB card (https://www..com/c/product/1338307-REG/sonnet_usb3c_2pm_e_allegro_usb_3_1_2_port.html) to host my new array on my old 2010 Mac Pro Tower. I installed the card, plugged in the array with the supplied TB3 cable, and fired up the computer. The RAID volume mounted immediately. Success! Out of the box, the array is formatted as a RAID5. I immediately deleted the RAID5 volume and created a RAID6 volume. There are several reasons for this, but the details are tedious. Suffice it to say this significantly increased the time needed for synchronization. The RAID controller maps the data stripes and the parity stripes for whatever RAID config you choose. This takes hours. In my case, synchronization took a little over 28 hours. However, subsequent operation has been silky smooth. And it's FAST, at least for a USB-connected device. The screen shot is from the Black Magic benchmarking application. Keep in mind my Sonnet card is dumbed down by the old Mac's PCIe 2.0 interface. Your mileage may vary.
My second Promise HD
My first one was excellent; then I bought a larger one. Both work as advertised and fast.
Not getting good speeds
Ive been with tech support since day one and still cant get read speeds on raid 5 up over 500 mb. Very frustrating.
