Pentax FA 645 120mm f/4 Macro Overview
The smc FA 645 120mm f/4 Macro Lens from Pentax is a medium format, manual and autofocusing, short telephoto/portrait prime lens that provides a 35mm equivalent focal length of 96mm when used on a Pentax 645D or 77mm on a film 645 camera. The super multi coating (SMC) significantly increases the amount of light transmission. The lens offers a 1:1 magnification ratio and focuses as close as 15.4". The focus limiter can be used to set the focusing distance range for increasing the speed of the autofocus. The maximum aperture of f/4 can be stopped down as far as f/32. The lens was developed using computer-assisted optical design technology for a high degree of precision. It uses a floating mechanism and an independently-moving aperture mechanism. It also features extra-low dispersion (ED) glass to correct for chromatic aberrations, helping to deliver sharp imagery with high contrast and clarity throughout the focusing range.

Pentax FA 645 120mm f/4 Macro Reviews
the best for 645z headshots
I am a full time commercial/promotional photographer and made the switch to the pentax 645z for my commercial and higher end individual shoots. After a few months I had acquired all of the main lenses for this system including the amazing 120mm macro. Out of the 150, 200 and 120mm currently available for this camera, the 120mm is the real standout. The lens is used almost daily in my studio and stands up against the 90mm easily. As a matter of fact, I did side by side tests against the super pricey 90mm for the pentax 645z and couldnt not see enough of an image quality difference to justify keeping the 90mm. Its sharp, focuses quickly, built like a tank and has zero vignetting and ca. Overall an amazing lens that is almost a required purchase if you shoot fashion/headshots on the 645z!
It is what they says it is...
I don't like the way the auto/manual focus ring works. It is too easy to unintentionally slip from one to the other.
You pay less and get equal
120mm macro is a true classic. Everybody does and the quality overall is pretty much the same (pentax, fuji, zeiss etc). What makes this one special? Well just look at the price...This focal lenght is a very usefull one, kind of must have. Good for portraits, landscape, bugs, nature and macros. The quality is here even wide open you'll get sharp and crispy images, even at the farthest corner (as usual with others 120 macro).I can complain about the build quality, is not as good as hassel and leica, specially the aperture ring!
Superb Lens!
This lens is superb! It is being used on a Pentax 645D and I have to admit that it was my second choice only. Already having the older A120 without autofocus I was originally looking for the new 90mm lens. But being equal to a 72mm lens in FF terms it wasnt exactly too attracting and the fact of not having an aperture ring was another reason to not buy this lens. Those older lenses with an aperture ring can also be used via adapter on my Nikon bodies. So why did I buy this focal length again? Honestly for two reasons: ?1) AF -if perfectly calibrated- increases the keeper rate for medium and far distances and ?2) there is a correction module available in the DxO OpticsPro and PhotoLab software for this FA lens which applies corrections if needed. The lens renders sharply from center to the corners already wide open (assuming a flat object). With staggered (3D) objects a very slight tint of chromatic aberration appears in the out of focus regions. Closing down the aperture to f/5.6 improves sharpness a bit while chromatic aberrations are gone. Compared to my older A120 lens the new version performs much better here, i.e. wide open or close to it. The difference is getting less at f/8 and from f/11 on invisible. Although I have to say there is a bit higher micro contrast with the FA lens. F/16 is still very usable on both lenses while diffraction kicks in from f/22 and smaller. The new lens renders more neutral compared to the older which shows a warmer tint at the same cameras WB settings. The auto focus works precisely without the need for AF fine tuning. Being an auto focus lens the focus ring doesnt work that smoothly in manual focus mode like its manual predecessor. But this is true for many other lenses from other brands as well. The build quality is good, although Id consider the predecessors build quality slightly better. And yes it cannot compete with a HC120 in this field, but has the advantage of being a lot cheaper and lighter by around 500 grams which pays off when travelling. The huge lens hood, which is designed for 645 film, isnt to my liking and stays in the box. Since I use that lens on the smaller crop sensor (33mm x44mm) I replaced this hood by a 67mm screw-in type made by Heliopan which works pretty well. The lens caps work well and the added pouch is to my liking, much better than those delivered with HC(D) lenses. At the time of writing I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend it to a friend.
Sharp
I havent got time yet to test it so much, bought it two weeks ago, but it is a fanstastic lens, very sharp. One thing that surprised me was the way to change between automatic and manual focus. It was a new thing for me that you changed it on the top of the lens, but now when I know, it is absolutely no problem. I can really recommend it, because of the macroeffects.
