The Pentax PH-RBG Lens Hood for SMCP-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 Lens(58mm thread) is the dedicated lens hood for the Pentax SMCP-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 lens. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Fits perfectly
The lens hood fit perfectly, as I would have expected. The aftermarket model I had previously fit very poorly, and didn't shade anywhere near as well. I hope it lasts a long time. This piece of plastic is expensive.
It Works
This hood fits perfectly for this lens, it has the ability to be reversed for a camera case, but gives a large shaded area over the lens end, and good protection for the outer glass. A little pricey for plastic, but it goes on the lens around the bayonet mount and allows you to still add filters, or effects to the threaded end of the lens. As this lens is a zoom/telephoto lens, you probably won't want to have the lens hood reversed, as you would for storage, as it covers 75% of the zoom ring. Chances are, if you don't want to use the hood, but still take photos, you will want to remove the hood completely, or just use the hood. This hood is by-far better for this lens than using a threaded filter type hood, or a lens cap type hood.

use the lens hood to shoot while on trips to remote locations. the hood is fixed size and bulky to have on at all times.very cumbersome but does block out unwanted light
Does what it's supposed to do
This is a good quality lens hood that does its job. I can see a difference in photos taken with and without the lens hood in bright light. It fits backwards on the lens as well for convenient storage. I knocked it down a star only because it is rather expensive.
Works as expected!
I believed I had ordered a Pentax item previously, but it was a threaded item. The ability to click on and off separates it from your polarizing lens and allows it to store reversed and out of the way as well. Used it on a shoot in Nicaragua and never thought about it, just used it!
Fits DA-L Edition Lens
I bought this hood to go a Pentax DA L version of the 55-300mm lens that I bought second hand. It fits the DA L version and locks in place when used as a hood. If the hood is reversed for storage, it sits on the lens a little loose, but doesn't fall off. It seemed a little pricey, but I figured it was a good investment to get the lens hood designed for the lens.

I still need a longer hood for my lens.
