FINALLY...
What a birthday gift... FINALLY received it after 10 months; 1 day before birthday. Had ordered it within the 1st minute of pre-orders opening up on April 6th 2022. Back to the lens... The lens is stunningly sharp. Sharper than the 500mm PF AND sharper than the 800mm f/5.6. 6500$$$ is not chump change. For my middle class financial situation it was a massive investment and would be for many people. I had been on the fence many times during these 10 month whether to cancel the order but decided to hold on and glad I did. I have also purchased a Nikon HK-24 lens hood and VEEEERY slightly ground down the tabs on the inside of the hood and now the HK-24 fits ABSOLUTELY snugly on the 800mm PF. I did not like the flimsy cheap quality plastic lens hood and therefore wanted a hood that was much stronger and sturdier. I will also upload photos of the DIY lens hood, fitting the HK-24 onto the 800PF. Outer diameter of 800 PF and 500mm f/4 lenses is almost the same 140mm vs 139.5mm and therefore HK-24, 28, 34 or even HK-21 are perfect choices for the 800mm PF lens. I sold off a lot of my other camera gear to get some cash to pay for this lens. I will be posting photos very soon to update my review but the bottom-line is... the lens is EXCELLENT value for it's image quality. Anyone who says the 800mm f/5.6 lens is sharper is wrong and is only trying to justify their splurge. The MTF charts mean nothing because MTF charts are COMPLETELY dependent on the lens test equipment image sensor resolution. The 800mm f/5.6 lens was built during a time when 24 megapixels was the maximum resolution sensor available and that too with anti-aliasing filter (Nikon D3X). The higher the sensor resolution, the poorer an MTF chart looks. I have my uncle's 800mm f/5.6 for comparison and the PF lens is sharper. If you are on the fence... go for it. It is expensive. 6500$ is not cheap by any means but for the performance and at 10,000$$$ cheaper than the f/5.6 plus highly portable and manoeuverable, it is an incredible value purchase. I will be uploading photos soon but wanted to get the initial impressions out.
Incredible Reach!
The thing about this lens is it's stunning image quality while maintaining it's deep reach. I was surprised at how easy this lens was to carry around (very light weight for an 800mm lens) but kept running smack dab into it's deep reach and found myself backing up just to fill the frame (rather than cutting off half the subject. I suggest you carry something wider just for those times when the 800 is too much lens. Hey, what's not to like; reasonable cost, light weight and ultra sharp!
Picky picky
I'll cut to the chase. I own the 800 f mount and now this 800 z. The 800 f has nicer looking background softness and is for sure sharper. Like I said this is super picky but figured I'd share. Obviously the Z lens is 1/3 the price of the 800 f and it's 1/2 the weight.
Wow!
I've been shooting sports and nature with a Nikon 200-400mm zoom for many years. I felt like I needed a little more reach so that I didn't need to crop as much. Also the idea of a prime lense was appealing. I've shot with the 800mm and Z9 for a few days now (with a tripod and a Wimberley gimbal head - which by the way is fantastic) and I can tell you this lens is razor sharp even at f/6.3. I'm very pleased. The lens foot is not Arca-Swiss compatible so I bought a replacement foot.

amazing optic, really light, responsive, excellent sharpness, good vr. i wish the lens hood would be a bit sturdier, hope it doesn't get damaged. one issue with birds-in-flight, with such narrow field of view and using it hand-held ala 'run and gun', is time needed to pick up the target and get focused.

The Nikkor 800mm S lens is amazing. Its weight and 5 axis image stabilization enables these old bones to hand hold with little effort. I look forward to seeing how other S type lenses perform!
Big Bang for the Buck
This super-telephoto lens pairs perfectly with the Nikon Z9. The lens is tack sharp, and the autofocus works flawlessly with the camera. I shoot a lot of wildlife, mostly birds, a lot of small birds and birds in flight. This lens allows me to get shots that I could not have gotten before. It is also relatively compact and lightweight. I can walk around for hours and use the camera/lens combo handheld. The stabilization in the lens and camera allow me to get sharp photos handheld at shutter speeds as low as 1/250th of a second. This lens is allowing me to take my photography to a whole new level. It's not an inexpensive lens, but it is a bargain given the performance and features.
