Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S Overview
- 1Description
- 2Nimble Super-Telephoto
- 3Long Reach, Compact Design
- 4S-Line Optics
- 5Autofocus and Vibration Reduction
- 6Professional Handling and Construction
- Sophisticated optical design includes a series of specialized elements that promote a lighter, more compact overall design.
- Modest f/4.5 maximum aperture offers a practical balance between size, speed, and weight.
- With a size more akin to a 70-200mm f/2.8, this lens measures just 9.2" long and weighs 2.7 lb. Compared to the Z 400mm f/2.8 lens, this f/4.5 version weighs 3.8 lb less and measures 6" shorter in length.
- Helping to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations, color fringing, and comatic aberrations, this lens features one ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element and two Super ED elements, along with one SR (short-wavelength refractive) element.
- The SR element features a specialized high-dispersion design that refracts wavelengths shorter than blue; this helps achieve truly accurate color rendering and also aids in making the lens design more compact.
- Nano Crystal Coat has been applied for well-rounded anti-glare protection at all angles, helping to suppress ghosting, reflections, and flare for higher contrast and more accurate color response when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions.
- Advanced autofocus system uses stepping motors to deliver quick and accurate focusing performance, along with smooth and quiet AF that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
- Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
- Vibration Reduction image stabilization reduces the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
- Synchro VR is also supported when paired with compatible cameras featuring sensor-shift VR, which combines in-body VR with optical VR for improved results of up to 6 stops of compensation.
- As part of the lightweight, nimble design, the included tripod foot can easily be removed for a slimmed down design that's ideal for handheld use.
- Physical design focuses the center of gravity toward the rear of the lens, around the tripod mount, for smoother, more responsive panning when shooting handheld or working atop a tripod or monopod. The tripod mount also rotates for easier switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientations.
- Intuitive "no-look" control layout puts all of the frequently-used buttons and dials in easy-to-reach locations to prevent the need to move your eye from the viewfinder.
- Front anti-slip rubber grip for stable handheld use.
- Separate manual focus ring and a programmable control ring offer distinct levels of tactile control over shooting settings.
- Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.
- Weather-sealed design includes rubber gaskets to prevent dust and moisture ingress and the exposed elements have a fluorine coating that repels dirt and oils and is easier to clean.
- Store a focusing position using the Memory Set button so you can instantly return to this by position by pressing the Fn or Fn2 buttonsperfect for capturing fleeting movements.
- Two customizable L-Fn buttons can be set to configure subject tracking, AF lock, image playback, or other modes. The L-Fn2 button is also accessible from four different locations on the barrel for easy reach.
- Focus limiter switch can constrain the focus range to 19.7' to infinity or from the full focusing range of 8.2' to infinity.
- Programmable Control Ring can also be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
- Kensington lock support for securing the lens in place during remote shooting sessions.
- Uses front screw-in 95mm filters.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S Reviews
Great lens!
I hesitated on this lens since I already have the 100-400 but very glad I made purchase. The lens is light, easy to handle, super sharp and works great with TCs. If you can afford it I would definitely recommend picking it up.
Still Prefer the 500mm PF
I purchased this lens in hopes of replacing my much larger and heavier 300mm f/2.8 + TC-14E III combination and 500mm PF. This lens is definitely better that either in terms of handhold-ability, VR and AF performance. Where I struggled, though, was in optical performance. I found both the 300mm f/2.8 + TC combination as well as my 500mm f/5.6 PF to be noticeably sharper. To be fair, this may be specific to my particular copy of the lens. I will be trying another one as other reviews have shown the optical performance of the 400mm f/4.5 to be nothing short of spectacular.
Great lens
I really like this lens. Sharp, crisp pictures. I'm currently using it with a tel converter 2x and the Z9. I debated on the prime vs the 100-400. So far this lens has not disappointed in any way. I can't wait to get out and use it more!
Nikkor Z 400mm f4.5 Lens
Excellent lens, sharp and fast. Great combo with the Z9.
Solid 400mm lens
Haven't really had a chance to shake this out but from preliminary testing, I'm very satisfied. Got rid of a z100-400 and a 500/5.6 PF for this lens. The z400 + TC1.4 is as sharp as the 500. Granted I'm giving up 700mm but it's f8 and I wasn't really pleased with the contrast (acuity was fine). It also lightened my pack by a lot so, for me, it was the right move (and I was on the fence for a long time).
Another steller Nikon Z lens
This is my 5th Nikon Z lens and they are all awesome. The Z mount is obviously superior to the old F mount. Have not used this extensively yet as this time of year is almost always cloudy where I live but have done some indoor shots at very low speeds and am surprised at how sharp they are. On a rare sunny day, shots taken outside were very sharp, especially on a tripod. Like all telephotos, this lens requires good hand holding technique. Very happy with the lens.
Not worth the money I spent on this lens.
The lens did not fit my needs and the exchange offer is ridiculous.
Simply Amazing
I can't say enough good things about this lens. Mounted on a Z 7ii it is light and sharp. It has been great for bird and wildlife shooting. I use it often with a x1.4 Teleconverter and it is still tack sharp.
