MindShift Gear PhotoCross 13 Overview
The orange ember PhotoCross 13 Sling Bag from MindShift Gear is a camera bag that can fit up to a medium-sized DSLR along with two to four lenses, including a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.
Designed to fit snugly against the body, the PhotoCross 13 can be rotated from one's back to front for easy reach to its camera compartment. Access to the camera compartment is then provided by a top-facing zippered panel with a 180° upward opening. Along the inside of that zippered panel are two zippered, mesh organizational pockets which can be used to store and organize camera batteries, memory cards, or small electronics. Within the camera compartment and towards the side of the sling bag that rests against the wearer is a slip pocket with room for a 13" laptop computer, while four adjustable and removable dividers allow that compartment's space to be configured according to the specific camera equipment placed inside.
Also accessible when the PhotoCross 13 is rotated from back to front, is a zippered pocket located in between the camera compartment and the sling bag's front panel which faces away from the wearer. This pocket can be used as a convenient space for books, notepads, snacks, or packable clothing; and its zipper, like the camera compartment's zipper, includes a large, T-shaped pull. When those zippers are both in the closed position, their pulls are adjacent and can be looped together, further securing the contents of the entire sling bag.
In addition to being worn across the body, the PhotoCross 13 can be carried using its built-in top handle as well as its built-in side handle. This sling bag's adjustable, padded shoulder strap rests on the wearer's left shoulder, extends down the torso, and connects to a stability wing that rests over the wearer's right hip. The stability wing helps to more comfortably distribute weight, and like the shoulder strap along with sling bag's outside rear surface, features a resilient, breathable 3D mesh padding. The padding cushions the wearer, and its elevated structure optimizes air circulation, minimizing perspiration in warm and hot environments.
For an enhanced fit, a tuck-away waist belt is included. When used with the shoulder strap and stability wing, the waist belt helps to form a three-point harness that prevents the sling bag from unintentionally shifting around the wearer such as when traveling over rough or very uneven terrain. Along the PhotoCross 13 opposite its side handle is a large, stretchable pocket that can hold a 32oz water bottle, which can be secured using the cord lock on the pocket's rim.
Featuring a durable nylon and polyester construction, the PhotoCross 13 is built to be weather-resistant and includes a seam-sealed cover for use under heavy rain. Six gear loops along the surface of the sling bag allow for extra items to be clipped or tied to the PhotoCross 13. One pair of gear loops is located above the stretchable side pocket, and two pairs of gear loops parallel each other on both sides of the front panel along its top and bottom. Dual compression straps are provided and can be clipped onto the gear loops so they cross the front panel, allowing larger items such as a tripod, monopod, trekking pole, or folded apparel to be fastened against the PhotoCross 13. The stretchable side pocket can also be used to hold a tripod, monopod, or trekking pole; any of which can be secured under one of the included compression straps affixed to the gear loops positioned above the side pocket.

MindShift Gear PhotoCross 13 Reviews
My least favorite camera bag
Very disappointed in this product. It holds a body and telephoto lens, and that's about it. Water bottle sleeve is secure. Tripod straps are cumbersome. The laptop sleeve is smaller than advertised. My laptop doesn't fit. Padding is skimpy. Very cumbersome to use as a sling. The little pocket inside has a two-way zipper but the large compartment where you keep your camera has only a one-way zipper. Fail. Very uncomfortable to wear. I use this bag only to carry my gear from the apartment to the car. If I'm going for a walk or hike I take something else. This was one of those I'll keep it only because the cost to return it is too much bags. But it's likely headed to a donation bin soon.
5 Year Review
I'll start by saying that I bought this backpack in December 2017 from MindShift's Amazon page. After 5 years of use, this backpack has held up extremely well, and honestly looks almost as good as new since the materials are good and I don't abuse my gear. I've used this for photo and video work, as well as personal use: Weddings, hiking, motorcycle rides, concerts & music festivals, school, desk job, daypack for walking around, and as my main camera and lens storage bag before I invested in hard cases. Besides camera gear and lenses, I've also used it to carry things like audio equipment, drones, my iPad, up to a 14-inch MacBook pro, clothes, hiking gear, and I even slipped a hydration pack in there with the hose running out of the zipper. As far as what it can fit at the same time - I can squeeze a camera with the lens on, 2 extra lenses /or/ 1 lens+Zoom H5+MacBook charger, MacBook or iPad, lens filters, extra camera battery and a slim charger, lens cleaning pen, SD cards, phone charging cable and slim battery bank, water bottle in the bottle sleeve, and a tripod strapped to the back. PROS: - Build quality is amazing and the materials resist scratching - Customer service. The zipper broke on my first bag within a month after I got it. I emailed customer support and they took the bag back and gave me a new one. No issues 5 years later with the new bag. - Comes with a fitted waterproof cover - Just enough space to squeeze a 14-inch MacBook pro in the laptop sleeve - Velcro adjustable camera dividers - A good amount of space, especially if you remove the camera dividers - Easy access to camera gear without needing to remove the backpack CONS: - I discover that sling packs are cool, but not very comfortable for extended periods - Can't adjust strap to swap shoulders - I cut my key ring strap off because it was too long and kept getting in the way of the zipper - They skimped on the thickness of protective padding inside to save space - No padding on shoulder strap - Hurts to carry on back if you use heavier cameras and lenses - Since the bag rests at an angle, carrying a tripod shifts the way the bag sits on your back and can make it even more uncomfortable - Running with this bag doesn't feel good and it bounces around with every stride. If you need to jog or run with camera gear on your back, you're better off using a double-strap backpack with chest and waist buckles. OTHER NOTES: - This backpack is great if you don't need to carry around a lot of gear and you like sling bags - More weight = less time you can wear the bag comfortably - Try to keep your tripod as light as possible. I have a Manfrotto Befree tripod that only weighs 4 lbs. and I still think it's almost too heavy for this bag. - Make sure you use the waist straps and adjust everything to fit snugly against your body. Start by putting on your bag and adjusting the strap on the front. You want as much of the bag as possible touching your back, with the bottom just touching your waist. Then tighten the load control strap at your shoulder until it feels snug. Finally, buckle up the waist band and get it as tight as comfortable to help distribute more weight across your core. The waist strap should line up with your hip bones. - I like to use the Velcro inserts to keep my camera in the center of the bag so it isn't touching the bottom. There isn't much padding in the bag, so just be careful not to bang it around and put it down gently. I feel this bag deserves a 4.5-star rating. It has flaws that are inherent with most sling bags, and I wish they had more padding, but it's still a great bag and the cons aren't enough to make me drop my rating to a 4-star review.
The Right Tool Makes All The Difference
Focus on what you really need! Agreed, all the gear is awesome, but how often do you take gear 'just in case'. MindShift quality built, comfortable, light weight and easily accessible. Carry your carbon fiber tripod and sling the rest. Two bodies, three prime lenses, batteries, light meters, ColorChecker Passport, cell phone, and snacks, with a rain cover to boot! The world is your oyster!
This may be the one!
I have bought more camera bags than I want to admit and given many away. This is a keeper. I will be able to carry my D850 and 3 lenses. Also, a deciding factor is the cross body sling. It is more comfortable to carry on hikes and accessing my gear is a snap. Final factor, the fantastic price.
Almost Perfect Sling Bag
I now have three of the Mindshift PhotoCross Sling Bags (two13Ls & one 10L). I've found them to be nearly perfect sling bags. I use different camera configurations in each of three bags, so it's a grab and go setup. Bag rest well on bag and is fast to move around and open as needed. The only complaint I have is that the tapered shape of the bottom of the bag doesn't allow it to stand upright on the floor, it needs to be leans against something. But otherwise, it's a fast, highly portable sling bag with great storage.
Good for small kits, short trips
This bag was bought as an adjunct to the Mindshift Trailscape 18L that I have used for years when on vacation or doing wildlife photography. My wife uses the smaller Mindshift PhotoCross 10 sling bag, which is a great size for her small frame and a Leica Q2. I wanted something a little bigger than her Photocross for short trips or when I am just carrying a small kit, but I never liked sling bags; and, especially after back surgery, I need the even weight distribution provided by a backpack. In the Photocross 13 Backpack, a 13 MacBook fits snugly into a padded pocket in the main compartment. The camera slots are somewhat deeper than is ideal for the rangefinders, but are usable for two bodies, each with a 35 or 50mm lens attached and two other lenses attached to an Op-tech double lens mount. The camera compartment is easy to access. The smaller side opening keeps equipment better protected from weather than the front opening Trailscape. The bag sits on my back in a good place, and has a wide waist belt to provide stability for hiking. A tripod fits either over the front of the pack or in a side pocket. The side pocket is also good for carrying a water bottle. Unlike the trails cape 18L, there is little room for travel carry-on items (book, snack, phone, chargers) or accessories. The bag seems well constructed. I will use this bag for day hikes, but will continue to use the Trailscape for longer trips or when I require the use of my Leica SL2 and 90-280 telephoto lens as well as a rangefinder.
Nice Bag
I was looking for a protective bag big enough to accomodate my Canon 80D, a couple of lenses, flash unit and a few small accessories, and this bag does the trick without being overly large. It should fit under an airline seat. Everything is well secured with sufficient padding, but don't expect a lot of room for much else inside. Still, I can leave a basic kit with my flash and favorite walk around lenses, spare batteries and cards in the bag ready to go for those times i just want to pickup and go shooting without stopping to change gear. The side access is also super convenient. So what's in the bag's three compartments currently? An 80D Canon body with a Black Rapid strap in the center. A couple of soft ball sizes lenses and a prime on the shorter side (Canon 15-85mm ef-s 3.5-5.6; Signa 17-50mm 2.8; Canon 28mm). And on the deeper side a medium sized flash unit (600EX II speedlight with filters), an accessory pouch with memory cards, spare camera and flash batteries; and a Vello timer. If you're willing to swap out a couple of lenses and do some shuffling, a 70-200 telephoto should also fit on the deeper side of the bag. The construction looks and feels solid so I am looking forward to using this bag for years to come.
