MindShift Gear BackLight Elite 45L Overview
This gray BackLight Elite 45L Backpack from MindShift Gear is designed to serve the combined interests of the adventure photographer and winter sports enthusiast. Along the front and sides of this backpack, multiple compression straps and gear loops allow skis, a snowboard, snowshoes, or other outdoor mountain equipment such as an ice axe or hiking poles to be conveniently harnessed and carried. Inside, the spacious main compartment accommodates an included camera equipment pouch. The equipment pouch and its ten padded, touch-tab dividers can hold a two-DSLR camera kit with three prime lenses along with a 16-35mm, a 24-70mm, and a 70-200mm zoom lens. Alternatively, the equipment pouch can be configured for a multimedia kit with two mirrorless cameras, three zoom lenses, a prime lens, and a small drone. For users of ultra-telephoto optics, even when the equipment pouch is dedicated to a 600mm lens and a DSLR, additional capacity remains for a second camera, a 70-200mm zoom lens, or other accessories.
Complete access to the equipment pouch is provided by a rear-facing zippered panel with a 180° downward opening, while an additional zippered opening allows items closest to the backpack's top to be reached. Three touch tab fasteners along the interior of the BackLight Elite 45L allow the equipment pouch to be securely mounted when it is placed inside the backpack. The equipment pouch is then prevented from shifting and can be made to have its own top and rear-facing zippered openings aligned with the backpack openings for seamless accessibility to the cameras and lenses inside. To quickly convert the BackLight Elite 45L into a storage and transport solution for items other than cameras and lenses, the equipment pouch can be zippered shut and removed from the backpack's main compartment. Though designed to be used within the BackLight Elite 45L, the equipment pouch features durable polyester and nylon construction, a top handle, and its own adjustable backpack straps to serve as a practical carry solution when needed.
During storage or transport, the top opening of the BackLight Elite 45L can be capped by an included top lid that buckles into four adjustable straps along the backpack's front and rear panels for a secure fit. The top lid features a zippered pocket that faces the back of the wearer, which allows its contents to be reached without having to remove the BackLight Elite 45L. Similarly, zippered pockets along both sides of the backpack's waist belt provide secure on-the-go storage, while a zippered pocket along the front panel can hold photo accessories that are intended for use whenever the BackLight Elite 45L is set down.
Between the front panel's pocket and the main compartment, a zippered gusset pocket expands to accommodate up to 17L of gear that can include survival essentials or additional items for a mobile photo studio. Divided into the three sections, the section of the gusset pocket closest the wearer's back is designed to hold either a 17" laptop or a hydration pack and includes an exit for a sip tube. With its touch-tab retention flap, the gusset pocket's middle section can secure a 10" tablet computer or personal items with minimal shifting during transport. Capable of the most expansion, the section most adjacent to the front panel is suitable for packable clothing, gloves, a hat, or a towel.
For side trips or destinations that do not require the full capacity of the BackLight Elite 45L, its top lid and waist belt can be removed and combined to form a compact daypack that rests comfortably against the wearer's hips and lower back. When fully assembled, the BackLight Elite 45L can be lifted via its built-in haul handle, and carried by its adjustable, padded shoulder straps. The backpack's waist belt then serves to transfer weight away from the shoulders to the hips for additional comfort, while the sternum strap further limits unintentional shifting around the wearer. Featuring durable nylon construction, the BackLight Elite 45L is built to be weather resistant and includes a seam-sealed cover for use under heavy rain.

MindShift Gear BackLight Elite 45L Reviews
Great backpack
Very well made. Every feature is very well researched and thought out. Hols a lot of stuff and easily expandable. Highly recommend!
Excellent Product
I have been actively seeking a combo pack/photopack for some time. This product clearly addresses this need. It is well designed and well built. I have one relatively minor nit. It would be nice if the manufacturer offered the option of the large or smaller storage insert at time of purchase. I suspect that most owners who do a lot of backpacking will opt for the smaller insert as more room for hiking clothes and other gear. It is unlikely that longer distance hikers would want too carry a full bag of camera gear in these situations.
Extremely well built!
Lots of options, now to just figure out the best orientation for each piece of gear...
Awesome backpack!!
There is so much room for my gear. I have a gripped D850 attached to the nikkor 200-500 lens. It still fits my gripped D810 (no lens attached), a flash, 4 other lenses, batter charges, and the rain cover with a little room still spare. It is durably built. The waist belt and the shoulder straps help displace weight, so it is not too onerous to carry of the gear at once (it still weighs 20 lbs or so I can't say it is weightless).
Elite 45L Backpack, gray
Wore this pack on a hike through snow in the Rocky Mountains. At unpack I thought it would be to big and bulky but that was not the case. Once hiking it was comfortable and all features worked as advertised. My next step will be to order the smaller cube. This is, so far, the pack I have been needing.
So far so good
So, I analyzed this to death, hours spent on reviews and videos comparing the differences between the various bag options. I needed something that worked well for a day out in the field and a 3 week cross country photo adventure. My previous bag (PD) just didn't cut it. I also wanted something that matched my lifestyle (I'm a water bottle guy not a water bag). Flexibility for the innards (small amount of camera gear vs everything and the kitchen sink) was important. Also important was ease of use, easy to get into, easy to buckle back up. Also very important, which was a disaster with my last bag (yes PD), I needed something that acted and felt like a backpack. Weight on the hips, easy to adjust, solid sternum strap, any bag that does not have this is not worth whatever you would pay for it. I've been on a number of hikes/trips with the bag, and so far it checks all the boxes.Solid as a rock, excellent workmanship, lots of nooks to place items, very comfortable on long heavy hikes, I would highly recommend this bag. Things that maybe aren't so terrific? Would love to have ThinkTank offer more bags/cases/storage (doodads, batteries/cards/clothing etc. Also a small camera case insert option. They do have a medium camera case insert but they didn't put a lot of thought into it. It's an inch taller that the insert that comes with the bag (making it difficult to close the bag) and you can't strap it so you can reach it from the top.
Top Quality and Design
This Mindshift backpack is the perfect bag if you're looking for the following: - Top notch quality- this bag has it all, great materials, secure fasteners, waterproofing features, with an impressive build quality. - Design - after having several other highly recommended bags for my photography business, they were literally confusing to use. With some other bags you literally need a map to find gear that you've tucked away in a side pocket. I recently returned a top of the line bag because of the non-logical, unintuitive way the it was designed. The Mindshift bag has easy to access pockets and storage of your gear. It's light yet sturdy and I find my gear is very safe and secure. It may be a bit pricey for some but you really do get a lot for your money with this 45L bag. If you need a large but not too large bag for travel/hiking/photography and you are looking for straightforward easy to access design, then I highly recommend this product.
Best camera backpack
I'm medium build and it fits perfectly.
