Manfrotto HiLite Overview
The Manfrotto HiLite Illuminated White Background is a unique way to achieve hi key photographs. This inventive system, allows the photographer to minimize lighting scenarios while achieving spectacular results.
The HiLite Background is different in that it permits you to place your strobe head INSIDE the background, completely directing the light to the background and filling it with white light. No more worrying about 'spill' or having to test to see if the background light is positioned correctly since the background will be evenly lit. Furthermore, because the background is actually illuminated it means the subject can stand virtually right in front of it without casting a shadow.
This system also works as a rear softbox and can illuminate your subject as well. This means you can simply use use one other light in the front and you're ready to shoot.

These work great for creating simple white backgrounds for headshots. If you can put some space between it and the subject it will work even better. Sets up super fast. Much faster than seamless.

Perfect!! And BIG!
I don't have the option to have a large window in my studio so I thought I'd try this for that same feel. It is perfect! I'm so glad I gave it a chance! I'll definitely be getting lots of use out of it.
More versatile than I expected
I recently took up a studio space in the basement of a media building. As such I have no windows or sources of natural light. As part of what I shoot is boudoir style, where natural light is often desirable I picked this up thinking I would be great with the voile. I was very surprised when I got it to find it was much heavier duty than I expected. I was thinking it was going to be regular pop-up backdrop material, or even soft-box diffuser material. But its actually a heavier almost rubbery fabric. I think it should stand up to quite a lot. I was also surprised to find out how little flash power was needed to light the whole thing up. Originally I was hitting it with a 400ws studio strobe, but was having issues as that strobe only goes down to 1/32 power. I put my speedlite on a stand instead, and found that to be perfect at between 1/16 and 1/8 power. That makes this setup WAY more portable than I was expecting. We also found some creative uses by placing RGB tube lights inside for some really cool silhouettes. We even had one model climb inside and press against the front for a cool effect. This purchase has made my limited studio space MUCH more versatile. I'm looking forward to bringing it offsite for headshots also!
Too bad the material yellows over time and renders unusable
Over time the material yellows requiring additional strobe power to create a white effect, but that then creates too much spill light on the subject, so it effectively becomes unusable. Correcting in post is not conducive to image selection with customer present as pre-correction the images look bad. See image comparison between two different units.

Had one of these 7X6' but found it always just about a food short. Used one light in it. Alien Bee Ring light. And one light to side with soft box. With a white plexiglass floor. Did thousands of photos for yoga and fitness. 100% neutral lighting. And could place the models right on the page totally cut out. Could also shoot a subject and place them in photoshop with minimal shadowing to match lighting in photo used. These are not easy to find any longer. But here they are at good old . And with new LED lights can shot both stills and video at the same time. Brilliant.
