Developed by cinematographers, gaffers, and grips, the Redback 36" Octagon Parabolic LED Basic Kit from Hudson Spider is built around a 36" diameter fixture that can be set up in 5 minutes, broken down to a 12 x 8" cylinder, and packed in its shock and waterproof rolling travel case. The fixture's eight hinged aluminum and steel arms can be formed into a parabolic shape with a total of 3456 closely-spaced LEDs that combine to create a soft continuous source. In addition to softness, the Redback has a unique wrap-around quality, snappy contrast, and a crisp specular quality that some have called "magical" while most refer to it simply as a beauty light.
Using the included 90-305 VAC Litegear power supply/dimmer, the Redback has color temperature with a wide range of 2600 to 6500K with a CRI of 95+ - an indicator of superior accuracy in color rendering. It can also be dimmed from 0 to 100% and while you can make these adjustments locally on the fixture, you can also do it remotely via onboard DMX from a console.
For those requiring directional control and softness options this kit also includes a Redback Parabolic Reflector that includes a silver-interior Ultrabounce fitted cover, Magic Cloth diffuser, and full and 1/2 grid cloth diffusers. Also included are an IEC power cord, 24' header cable, and a 5/8" Baby pin with 3/8" threads. It all fits in the kit's water and shockproof rolling case.
- Design
- The key to recreating the umbrella bounced light look with LEDs is to have them positioned closely together, spread evenly along the length of a parabolic-shaped armature, and focused outwards, not bounced, combining to create one attractive, continuous soft source. This phenomenon makes direct LED a viable alternative to bounced HMI or Tungsten.

- The Redback was developed on set by cinematographers, gaffers, and grips to streamline the lighting and production process, making it a little easier to get the job done well.

- At 24 fps, ISO 800, the Redback reads f/22 at 3', f/11 at 6', and f/8.4 at 9'.
- "Magical" Light Quality
- There is an inexplicable quality about a parabolic source that some have called "magical." The way the 36 x 16" Spider light wraps around the subject is unique. The raw, undiffused LEDs create specular highlights in the skin and eyes and have been referred to as "beauty light."
- Pure White Light
- The LEDs used are a hybrid of 2600K (tungsten) and 6500K (daylight) and can be easily cross-faded throughout that entire spectrum, including textbook even dimming from 0-100%. The CRI is 95+ utilizing the Litegear engine.
- Super Bright
- The unit requires no diffusion and can therefore pack a real punch. The output of the Redback's 3456 LEDs running 24V at 400W is comparable to an umbrella-bounced fixture of similar size with a 2500W HMI bulb.
- Easy Rigging
- The unit weighs in at 7 lb, 4 oz, making it very easy to rig from the included 5/8" Baby pin either mounted at the front or rear 3/8" thread mounting points, typically with a standard grip head found on any C-stand.
- Strong and Compact
- The Redback is built robustly with the strongest materials. It is quick to collapse down to a 12 x 8" cylinder - a fraction of its open size, and packs into a rolling travel case that is water and shockproof.
