Godox R200 Reviews
Serious TTL exposure issues (Sony)
I recently purchased an AD200 Pro + R200 ring head for use as a macro ring light (with X2 as trigger) The AD200 using either speedlight or bare bulb head seems to do TTL exposure well, and overall I'm pleased with it except for some issues around firmware update (which was strongly recommended by the R200 packaging). Basically: don't use the mac app; find a way to update on Windows unless you enjoy apparently bricked devices. Unfortunately, TTL metering / control on the R200 has some serious issues. I'm still tracking down what might be a root cause here -- auto ISO makes it worse, as does wide apertures to some degree -- but neither of those are definite. Sometimes TTL metering works well, but probably 50% of the time I'm getting 2.0 EV overexposure and useless images. Stopping down and setting manual (low) ISO help a bit, but it's not a sure thing -- and this shouldn't be necessary. What is clear is that the light/head is firing with much more power than it needs. I've seen how low the output can go with manual control, and it seems to be hovering around 1/1 to 1/16 for all TTL exposures. Seems like a clear firmware bug. Unfortunately I'm now left with options of waiting for Godox to fix this, or returning the R200 (at least) for either a dedicated Nissin ring light or a Godox MF12. I do think the AD200 itself is worth keeping, but this product does not seem to be release ready.
Having a blast with this...
First let me say, my primary business is boudoir, so I'm not using it much for that. But I also do monthly beauty and fashion shoots for a local professional makeup school in L.A. So, this is something I can use not only for fun run and gun on the street, slice of life style fashion, but I can also add the reflector which makes the light a bit larger and softer, for the more beauty close-ups. I also very much like that it's versatile too! Since it comes with an umbrella attachment, it cane be used more like a studio strobe in an umbrella (or umbrella style softbox like the Westcott Apollo or Orb). One thing to be aware of, you must update your AD200pro to the latest firmware to use the modeling light feature. But that's really pretty easy to do. Oh, and you'll need a Godox trigger to fire the light. Just get the right one for your camera system. I'm using Fujis.
Good but not for everybody
I had wanted to use this more on location outside during the day than for interior shoots but it doesn't have HSS capability. If you only want to use it where there isn't a lot of ambient light it does give you a look that is unique to ringlights at a bargain price.
