Field Optics Research FPH-ULP Reviews
25lbs, no.
the castings are well done, the twin tilt locks are annoying if you plan on doing more than setting the tilt once in a while. the locking screws on this head are extremely anemic for a supposed 25lb rating, and the knobs on them are molded-on ABS plastic. this thing is going to fall apart after a few hours of use carrying a 25lb load. this head might be useful with a small point and shoot or mirrorless but for large astronomical binoculars (or i'd say anything over 5lbs) these are fantastically overrated, just because of the hardware, which is unfortunate. boxing it up for return right now, and BHPV is excellent with returns. thanks!
Well Built, Might Not Work for Everyone
A USA-built head, metal and solid. There wasn't enough information on the product page about the details so it might not work for everyone. The handle is passive - it doesn't turn to lock the head, it's only used for leverage. There are TWO joints for adjusting pitch which makes it very robust and solid, but less smooth. Panning is similarly solid with some resistance. The biggest problem is the plate - the description doesn't say that it cannot be rotated 90 degrees to facilitate cameras with the plate parallel to the sensor. I had to buy an extra square Arca plate that can now provide support for BOTH orientations of the camera-mounted plates. Otherwise, you might end up with adjustable tilt instead of pitch.
much better control
Using with my new Celestron C5. Once I figured how to adjust and level out scope this pan head has good control for the price.
