DZOFilm GNOSIS 32mm T2.8 Macro (ft) Reviews
Professional Macro Primes worth the price.
In my opinion the DZOFilm Gnosis 32mm & 65mm Macro Prime Lenses are well constructed high performing macro lenses for professional use on motion projects. I first ordered the 32mm and was so pleased with the sharpness and contrast that I bought the 65mm Gnosis right after. As I've bought both the 32mm and the 65mm so I am posting one review for both lenses. I am a long time tabletop DP and I've finally found a 32mm macro worthy to buy, replacing my usual rental of Arriflex Self Compensating Macro Primes. The 32 lens Gnosis shoots 1:1 for real, but, at that magnification the subject is even with the barrel of the lens. The 65mm allows you to back off a bit and at 1:1.3 it is more towards micro/macro shooting. When shooting with the 65mm Gnosis in Full Frame at its most macro the field of view is 26mm wide and in super 35 the FOV is 20mm so, these are true macros. I found the sharpness to be very good up to T16 and T22 is good too. They both the 32 and 65 have good flare resistance, decent chromatic aberration characteristics and it is wonderful that they cover full frame. They do focus breathe a lot when you get close. When I put these lenses up on a projector, they were very sharp into the corners in Super 35 and a little bit soft at the corners in full frame which is common. In comparison to the Arri Self Compensating Macros the Gnosis lenses are sharper and more contrasty, focus closer, flare less, breathe more and cover full frame which the Arri wider lenses won't. It is very handy to have the PL and LP and EF mounts available. The mounts are easy to switch. I am hoping they will make a 24mm Macro as well. On the negative side, I wish they didn't have a big logo that says Make Your Movie on the lens. I wish the footage witness marks were on the operator's side, and not on the AC's side. I wish they didn't breathe so much. I have used the 32 and 65 on two national commercial shoots and the results were excellent. I'll be using these lenses mounted to my Phantom VEO 4K on a Bolt Jr. Plus in my studio.
