Chimera POP Bank Reviews
4.5 stars :-)
I'm not a fan of the snap bag/pop bag design in general. However these fit great on my gemini 2x1's, and stay in place. It was a good up between these and the foo choice and i went with this because it was about $200 or so less. I feel like it should have 1/4 grid in addition to the full and 1/2 grids that come with it. Overall I'm very satisfied and would buy it again if I had another light
Surpising Misstep From a Trusted Brand
I've been using Chimera products for years, and have always relied on them to churn out a quality product. Which is why I was baffled when I got my hands on the Chimera POP Bank. Pros: It's a durable material that feels like it will stand up to whatever you throw at it. I like that there are rubber grips on the stretching fabric as well for additional hold on the light. Really helps to avoid slippage. Plenty of Velcro to fit OEM and 3rd party diffusion alike as well also menas you're not pigeonholed by choice if you get this thing; it's very compatable. The Soft box also automatically pops open as well, which makes it a breeze to open, build, and get going. Likewise the tear down is very fast and efficient. Carrying case is also compact and designed well. Cons: It's barely too small, so it doesn't even fully fit on an Astra that it was specifically designed for, instead always pops off on one corner or another as you try to force it on. The same goes for Cimera's OEM diffusion sheets which are also barely too small to fit with the soft box. There's snug, and then there's small, and here it's definitely the latter. Speaking of the diffusion, the stitching patterns on this feel like they were done by a college student rather than a reputable company. It really puts the "hand-crafted in the USA" label to shame. Craftsmanship on both the sheets is wildly inconsistent, and even cuts off the Chimera Logo on the Full. Not a great look. Thirdly, as a design choice, the diff sheets don't even use the industry-standard color coding for 'half,' and 'full' (green and red respectively). This is standard across all other products, from Matthews, to American Grip, and even the Lightpanels Soft Box. To not include it is such a quality-of-life dip it makes you wonder what they were thinking. I repainted the diff tags myself so I can more quickly grab what I need, as opposed to fishing around for the tag, stopping, reading, and so forth. This seems like such an obvious oversight that it's embarrassing. I'm not completely dissatisfied with my purchase, but if I had to do it again I would definitely spend the extra $100 and get the OEM soft box from Litepanels. It's a far superior quality, and you won't have to fight to get it on.
Great product!
Couldn't be easier and more useful to use. This style pop bank stays seated on the light correctly unlike some of the older styles that would slide off sideways and never really seat correctly. I own two of these pop banks and would highly recommend them!
Why would you spend more on the other ones
Someone explain it to me. Please. This soft box works great, breaks down to a nice, portable form-factor and fits any 12x panel. (I've used it with our Litepanel Astras and even our flimsy Dracast flexi panels... which... honestly was a bit janky... but still....) And its a big surface. Not as sourcey as most of the 12x boxes. Haven't had it for long, so can't speak to longevity, which can be a problem with fabric things, but for now, I recommend it.
Essential purchase
This should really just come with the P300c as standard, very well made, extremely easy to snap into place (literally) and mount. Just try remember how it's packed, as it may take a moment to work out how to fold back, sort of like a map. Egg crate should come included as standard, for the life of me I can't find one made for it.
Great build quality
A must-have for this light. Very easy to put together.
Great Diffusion Option for Astras
We've borrowed and rented these for number of projects, but finally needed to purchase our own. They set up quickly, are well made, and diffuse the Astras nicely. Perfect for mobile shoots that require multiple quick setups.
Took a chance and Real Happy
I've been using the other snap bags for my panels , but I like these a lot better! They're a lot lighter and easier to deal with and you get a full and a half scrim which is huge! The Chimera grids are a lot nicer than the other ones and way easier to deal with!
