Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Reviews
For the price its a 5 star len
Im just starting on photography this is a must considering the price you pay
Really fast AF, great MACRO too
I've shot deer in the back yard, birds, butterflies and my dog running full speed at me. My R6 tracks them far better than my EF-mount 70-200, late release version III lens. That lens came out in like, 2019 or something. Anyway, this one is for the RF mount. I really don't seem to notice F8.0 when i set my min shutter speed to 1/250th and AUTO ISO. Sure when my dog was running at me I knew to only shoot that in full BRIGHT sunlight. Otherwise, the IS works well for lower lit, slower moving subjects. Took it to the butterfly house with my wife, son and in-laws. It worked AWESOME as a non macro, macro lens. Min focus distance is short, allowing for great up close shots. Lot of people think, 400mm, i can shoot something far away, but just as important, you can shoot SMALL THINGS that aren't that far away. color is great AF speed is incredible (R6). Faster than my 300mm f2.8 L IS (v1). Way faster. I can't believe my dog can run full speed at me and I get almost every shot in focus using electronic shutter, so yes, there's some distortion as that mode should only be used for slower moving objects, but I like shooting at 20FPS!!! very light weight, great lens. I have owned at least 25 L lenses and some of them are better within this 100-200mm range, and the fixed 300mm, but boy, not by much! I only wish i could blur background a bit more. Kinda spoiled by the 300mm f2.8, but my back would be breaking right now if i lugged that to the butterflies today. I only bought this cause i couldn't get my hands on the 100-500. I don't think I'm going to buy one of those now. I'm sure it's even better, and i'm excited that if this lens is so good, then the L version must be a really great lens. All 6 of my images were straight out of the camera.
Great Vlaue for the money and image quality
Of course I was worried about the speed of this lens and being able to blur backgrounds at f8. The RF 100-400mm f5.6-8 IS is a pleasant surprise. At 400 mm, 1/250 second, I get very sharp hand held images with smooth backgrounds. ISO 1600 on a Canon R6 is no big deal. Still very sharp images. I have no problem at ISO 3200 with this combination for most uses. I'd buy this again. Especially since the RF 100-500 isn't really all that fast at f7.1 and has jumped in price from $2500 to $2900 dollars. What real choice did I have? This lens is the best value for price and image quality for the Canon RF system.
Totally worth its asking price.
This lens is so lightweight my videos were a lot steadier. And don't be afraid of the f/8 @ 400mm. I have the 800mm f/11 and with plenty of light it is not a problem. High ISO will introduce some noise but with Topaz DeNoise not an issue for me.
Sharp and light
For the money, a great lens. Weight is feather light, so carry around is effortless. Bokeh is decent. Needs a lens hood.
Tough to beat for the price
Really what more can you ask for at this price?
I love it
Finally time gave me the opportunity to walk along the beach and use this long-range lens, where you can photograph birds, some exotic in detail, like nature, which otherwise would be impossible for me.
Animal eye AF issues
The lens was nice and sharp. I was honestly overall happy with the way it performed, but the animal eye AF was noticeably bad, and the focus was way slower than the other RF glass I have. Both my 35mm STM and my Samyang 85mm AF have faster, more accurate, and more consistent AF when using the animal eye tracking. It looks on to humans just fine for the most part. I know it's not my R6 too, because, without changing my settings, this lens was noticeably worse when it came to animal eye tracking.
