CalDigit TS4 Reviews
This is The One
I am currently running an M1 MacBook ultra and need the power and versatility that the TS4 gives me. A second monitor, ATEM Mini, Rodecaster Pro 2, Speed Editor for Davinci Resolve, external SSD drive all go thru the TS4 with absolutely no issues. If I expand, I know the TS4 can take the load. Don't buy just what you need, purchase for the future and for the expandibility, you will be glad you did.
I bought this thinking CalDigit was the industry leader
I bought the CalDigit TS4 thinking that they were the industry leader and that my dock needs would be met. Unfortunately, the dock isn't all it's cracked up to be-and is particularly not great when used with an M1 Mac. My two biggest concerns are with useless ports and an inability to work with the Cam Link 4K. There's another issue you'll see in many reviews about the M1 only connecting to one external monitor. Unfortunately, the TS4 won't help with that, but that's the fault of Apple, not CalDigit. First, there are several USB-C ports that are insufficient to charge my phone. Perhaps this is an issue of insufficient power, but at $400+ USD I expected this dock to handle it. Second and most importantly, when I plug in my dSLR via the Cam Link 4K, my video source freezes after a few seconds. This is a crucial part of my setup and never freezes when connected directly to the MacBook Pro. I've seen reports online that it's an issue with the Cam Link, the TS4, and an M1 Mac, so I don't know who's responsible, but the fact that plugging into my computer resolves the problem puts it on CalDigit, in my mind. Ultimately, I'm now back to using an adapter I wanted the TS4 to eliminate, with both ports on my laptop now used up. On the plus side, it lets me use Ethernet to connect my laptop and makes it easier to connect to / disconnect from my home setup, though that is quite rare in my case.
Perfect for One-Cable lifestyle
I'm an audio engineer, so it's not uncommon for me to be utilizing every single available port on any given machine that I have, in addition to needing some hubs. I used an iMac for years, so the spaghetti was out of view, but when I recently upgraded to a new MacBook I wanted to clean up the look of my desk while ensuring I could still easily take my laptop out of the studio for portable use. I'm happy to report that this hub is precisely what I needed to do just that. One USB-C cable to my laptop now connects me to my audio interface, two hard drives, an external display, several MIDI devices, and wired ethernet. AND it charges the computer! You might think this is expensive for a hub, but you won't find another one this capable with such a broad feature set and available I/O. Out the box with no setup it worked flawlessly.
Works Great with MacBook Pro M2 Max
I just recently upgraded to the newest MacBook M2 Mac and purchased this Hub. I have every slot occupied with external HD's, monitors, etc. and it works as advertised. I was quite surprised and pleased that it works so flawlessly. I have a 27' 5k LG ultra fine and a 32 Dell Ultrasharp monitor running through the hub. I wouldn't hesitate in buying this product again.
Finally, a dock that can connect to multiple external drives
I think I bought 5 different docking stations before I found one that I could connect multiple USB3 external drives and actually use them. There are a few potential improvements, but they're minor; I'd rather not need an active HDMI adapter, my phone won't sync when connected to the front 20W USBC port, and it's a little too tall to fit in my under desk cable organizer
Cal digit TS4
It's good, but I have had a lot of issues. For example I am still not able to connect an external monitor with my computer and the SD reader only works 50% of the time.
Works great after updates
Heard about the firmware issues but Caldigit released the mac version of the firmware updates. My monitors wake from sleep as expected. I really love this dock. Probably the best tb4 dock out in the market. The display port on the back is great as well.
Best I have ever used..
With Covid our office switched to Mac Book Pros (Currently M1 versions). Each employee is setup with an external monitor at work and home connected to a TS4. We use them all day every day and they just work. Having used other hubs invariably I would need to unplug and replug in to fix a glitch...not so with TS4...they just work.
