Avenger D650 Reviews
Heavy and Sturdy
Nice boom arm. Great value!
Very strong!
This does exactly what I need it to do. Word of advice though...make sure you get an Avenger High Combo Stand. Tried it on a Matthews Hollywood Combo Stand and it sits very loose.
Nice and stable
After tightening all knobs it holds my Para 133 with a Profoto head pretty stable, without tilting. I wouldn't put any kind of heavy monolight in the Para though. Overall for the price it seems great.
cheaper alternative to the Mini Max
I like this product. It is rigid and versatile and helps you position lights extended a fair distance without seeing the stand in the shot. It can hold a somewhat heavy fixture. It held a Mole Baby Junior, and it still felt can take a lot more.
Amazing Boom
I bought this boom to use a Mola Mantti 43.5 and a profoto D1 head... I used to have the Avenger D600 but found it inadequate for very heavy modifiers. The Boom is super sturdy looks amazing and doesn't break a sweat with the Mantti boomed. The only CONs I see that I didn't like are:- You don't have a security end or rubber handle or something at the end of the boom similar to d600 boom, its a round shiny slippery tube, therefore the Weight that is pretty heavy and is also metal with a flat surface doesn't provide enough safety against slipping through the tail end and falling into the ground or worst hitting somebody in the head or foot the boom has a faint level near the end but this doesn't stop a weight like this from going past this point and slipping off the boom.Solution: use black electric tape near the end several turns to make a safety stop in case the weight slips and also place tape where the counterweight is tightened into the boom so that it wont slip. I think there is a very good reason why avenger decided to ship this boom with a bolt counterweight not a handle counterweight, I was very happy that I got from my retailer a counterweight with handle, its nice and convenient to put on or off but after trying to tighten it I intermediately felt insecure about the counterweight, I suspect the bolt and a wrench would be more secure to tighten, specially with this shinny flat slippery tube that doesn't have a security stop at the end.- You don't have a hook to place additional and provisional sand bags. Solution: use a counterweight with handle that suits you and that you can take on or off, in my case as I had a handle counterweight, you can hang sand bags at the counterweight handle- You cant remove the pin and place it upside down like in avenger 4050cs, the only option is to use the boom pin head facing subject or you would need to buy an avenger baby pin to hang the light upside down like and use the in my case the manfrotto mola handle to swivel the light up and down this would allow you to boom it out of your way and place the light stand far away, otherwise the light would just slip and face down always. Conclusion, unless you can spend $+ in a manfrotto megaboom this is the best boom you can get for a heavy modifier, if avenger would have made the boom with a rubber or foam handle and with a hook and a handle counterweight like 650 it would be 5 stars and the best boom out there.
Nice and sturdy
This is a heavy boom that is designed to be used professionally. As many have said before, why the counter weight is shipped with a bolt instead of a handle is not clear.
Love it!
So much cheaper than the Matthews! Works great too with the counterweight! I do wish it could fit a bit more snugly into a Matthews Combo Stand as it goes in a bit loose until tightened, but it still works. Just means I have to get an Avenger Combo Stand!
Room for improvement
The boom arm is pretty substantial and a definite upgrade over the D600 which I also own. However, it's missing a hook for a weight bag, and the supplied counter weight does not have a handle with which to tighten it in position (it's a bolt so you need to use a wrench). Two minor improvements to get five stars.
