MindShift Gear BackLight 26L Overview
Outdoor photographers can look forward to a high degree of comfort and easy access to gear with the woodland green BackLight 26L Backpack from MindShift Gear. This pack has a padded rear compartment with touch-fastening dividers for storing and organizing a standard-size DSLR, four to six lenses, a flash, plus space for an assortment of additional accessories. This compartment is accessed by unzipping the back panel. By sliding the shoulder straps off and using the waist belt to rotate the pack in front of you, the pack will rest in a horizontal, tabletop-like position. This feature enables you to quickly access your gear without having to remove the pack. Underneath the rear compartment lid are two zippered clear-mesh accessory pockets for things such as memory cards and batteries.
The second large compartment on the front of the backpack has padded sleeves for a laptop up to 15" and a full-size tablet up to 10". It also features an organizational panel with slip-in pockets and space for a variety of personal gear such as clothing and snacks. On top of the pack are pockets for a cell phone, wallet, and other items you wish to keep handy. And on both sides of the pack there are slip-in pockets with a cinch strap for storing water bottles up to 32 oz or a set of gloves. Front stuff pockets are useful for trail essentials such as a headlamp, chargers and energy bars. Side compression straps are used to keep the load tight and give you more security when carrying your equipment. Two front daisy-chains and attachment loops are suitable for attaching many types of gear, and with the compression straps are part of the front and side tripod attachment system.
You can carry your Backlight pack with the top handle, or wear it on your back with the adjustable shoulder straps, chest connector and padded waist belt. For comfort, the shoulder straps are curved and the back panel has padded-mesh material and airflow channels. Designed for efficiency, the waist belt has a webbing rail for attaching optional MindShift accessories or other equipment and can be detached when needed via its quick-release buckle. With an exterior made of water-repellent 420D nylon, 350G airmesh, YKK zippers and other materials, this pack is durable and can be safely deployed in most weather conditions.

MindShift Gear BackLight 26L Reviews
Great Photo Bag for the active photographer
I bought this bag to replace another bag that I had for many years. This bag has a different configuration but stills all the tools I need for photography. Interesting variation on having the bag open from the rear. I can certainly see the advantages. Appears to have plenty of room for my laptop, tripod, and other gear. The shoulder and waist bands are well padded and comfortable. Looking forward to many different adventures with the bag.
Love this backpack
Great pack. Carries all my gear when traveling by plane and is reasonably sized for the day long photo hikes I do. The outermost pocket can hold a 1.5 liter Camelback hydration bag and the hose is easily held in place by existing straps. Ideal for me when hiking in summer.
I Like This Backpack!
I had a Lot of gyrating thought around a comment made by someone who said the bag would not work with their battery pack-camera-L-bracket combo and long lens. Obviously with such a setup space would be lost. However, My Z6II with MB-N11 and Promediagear L- Bracket fits nicely with a Z MC 105mm attached and could easily accommodate my 70-200mm, attached, with padded insert reconfiguration, as well. Another comment was made about the lip around the camera-lens-gear compartment getting in the way of gear removal. My answer to this is That I don't have issues here, however, my camera and lens setup will most likely be around my neck and shoulder on its sling by the time I'd be presented with this potential problem anyway. My first impressions are "great backpack" well worth the expense. I do agree however, that this bag will not fit under the seat of a domestic air carrier, would have to go overhead. It feels very comfortable to wear, sans tripod or monopod (not tested yet) but I have yet to spend an entire day with it on my back.
Comfortable but not optimally usable
The thick padded straps have no side seam which means they don't dig into the shoulder, (as so many other bags do). Thus, this is the most comfortable bag I've worn. Other than that, the bag makes all sorts of compromises to look good but function suboptimally for a photo backpack designed for a hiker. The top pocket is sewn flat so won't store more than a credit card or two , without risking being deformed or needing to be fished out. The interior pockets are similarly lacking in side walls to make the volume reduced and getting items a bit harder. Thankfully the pockets inside the back flap are mesh so their contents can be seen, but still requiring more effort to fish something out, due to their flat design (just a 1/4 inch of side walls would help). The hiking compartment is about 2 inches in depth. If you pack a jacket or sweater in there, you've used up the space. There is a front pocket but this is also sewn flat so that any contents here will cannibalize the space from the adjacent hiking compartment. There are no zippered side pockets. So, if you want to store a jacket, gloves, hat, head lamp, snacks, small safety kit, knife, you'll have to squeeze them into the hiking compartment and then fish them out later (and hope you don't drop anything onto the dark forest floor). There is a compression strap at the bottom, but it crosses over the 'water bottle pocket on the sides, tToo common in backpack makers.), So one has to either prioritize using the pocket or using compression. There are gussets inside of the hiking compartment zipper which allows the opening to be wider without stuff falling out, but the fabric is sewn with cloth going toward the zipper, so that when zipping the flap closed, the gusset would get caught in the zipper. I ended up sewing the cloth so that it pointed away from the zipper, which solved the problem. There are side compression straps on the side's top , which hold my tripod when I load into one of the side pockets. The material of the pocket has held up well despite the tripod feet pocking there. If you want to open the hiking compartment, you have to undo the side compression strap. Unfortunately, while the zipper is at the front, the clip for the compression strap is toward the back. So, if this bag was well designed, it would take into consideration that storage requires organization, accessibility as well as space. it would have its pockets provide volume instead of being two dimensional, (especially true for the top and front). The hiking compartment should be deeper (in the sagittal dimension). There should be closable side pockets (above the current water bottle pocket. (or an attachment device / system so that side pockets could be added here). A strap on the side (for securing gear) should not cross the front compartment zipper. And a compression strip that does cross the front compartment zipper should clasp on the same side as the zipper. The lower side pockets should have a pass through opening for the bottom compression strap, which would give the user the option to fully access the pocket with the strap underneath, or to put the strap over the pocket to secure gear here. And the fabric of gussets should be sewn so that they point away from the nearby zipper so as not to get caught in it.
Almost perfect
As others have noted, this bag is superbly built from fabrics to zippers. My only complaints are 1) that the belt straps do not detach for city-walking and no pockets are included for quick access to small items on the belt. 2) the shoulder-straps lack adjustment to balance load on top and 3) the tiny zip pocket is (close to) useless for quick access items like wallet or keys.
Great design for hiking photog
A great design for photography. Easy to access gear and not have to put the bag on the ground. Good fed gun for equipment and other items needed for hiking hiking and photography
Comfortable for long distances.
I recently used the MindShift Gear BackLight 26L Backpack (Charcoal) for a convention in Las Vegas. I carried two a7iv's with 28-200 lenses, a charger, battery, two water bottles, and snacks for over 30 miles of walking and the pack was comfortable the entire time. The backpack's design allowed for easy access to my camera gear and the well-padded straps and back panel made it easy to carry all of my items without any discomfort. One thing I really appreciate about this backpack is that it doesn't have the normal overtly sleek tech look to it, but has more of an outdoorsy vibe which is nice and can help you not stand out or look like a target for tech thieves. Overall, I highly recommend the MindShift Gear BackLight 26L Backpack for anyone in need of a durable and comfortable backpack for carrying camera gear and other essentials.
Best bag ever
I've used this bag all over the world for various projects and trips. I've never had to gate check or been unable to stow my cameras and lens gear in the main cabin with the 26L. Whether medium format or 35mm full-frame, all my essential cameras and lenses for any given project manage to fit in this bag. It's light and comfortable enough to carry all day on site or through complex travel segments. Over the years I've chopped up and re-taped the separators many times for various camera/lens configurations, so I'm about to replace the bag. I've had many camera packs, some of which I liked very much, but none as useful or long-lived as this one.
