The phantom-powered custom transformer and JFET electronics provide +12 dB of output gain, allowing the NUVO N22 to work with a wider range of preamps than traditional passive ribbon mics.

The inclusion of a custom transformer helps the NUVO N22 achieve a strong output level while retaining low-noise performance.

Its figure-8 polar pattern exhibits the classic pickup traits and side-rejection qualities associated with ribbon mics. A standard XLR 3-pin male connector is on the mic for hookup to virtually any microphone preamp; 48V phantom power is required to power the mic's active electronics.
The extra output is a major advantage when recording quiet sources like vocals and soft acoustic guitars. The active circuitry also prevents noise and interference on long cable runs and when operating near large lighting rigs.
