- 1Description
- 218.2MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
- 3ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 30x Zoom Lens
- 4Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
A sleek form factor along with capable imaging and a long-reaching zoom, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX99 from Sony is a compact camera well-suited for travel and everyday shooting. Revolving around a back-illuminated 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, the HX99 is capable of producing notably smooth and clear imagery with low noise levels, along with an expandable sensitivity range up to ISO 12800. The sensor and processor combination also avail fast performance throughout the camera system, including a 10-fps continuous shooting rate and UHD 4K30p video recording. Complementing the imaging is a balanced physical design, which incorporates both a pop-up OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder and 180° tilting 3.0" 921k-dot touchscreen LCD, along with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless image sharing and remote camera control via a linked smartphone or tablet. Contrasting its sleek size, the HX99 is also distinguished by its impressive 30x zoom ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens, which provides a 24-720mm equivalent zoom range. Spanning wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, this lens benefits from Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld imagery. Designed to be a versatile, all-in-one pocketable camera, the HX99 mixes both capability and intuitiveness to appeal to a wide range of shooting needs.
Additionally, the HX99 is the first HX-series camera capable of recording UHD 4K video, at either 30p or 24p frame rates, as well as Full HD video. 4K video uses full sensor pixel readout to record approximately 1.6x times the required information, and this oversampling process helps to deliver greater clarity along with reduced moiré and other artifacts.
Complementing the optical design, Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake. An Intelligent Active Mode is also available to reduce blur common to shooting video while moving. Also aiding in achieving sharp imagery, Fast Intelligent AF employs an optimized spatial object detection algorithm to quicken focusing speeds, and Eye AF can be used to automatically detect and focus on the eyes of the main subject.
- Helping to maintain a sleek form factor, the 638.4k-dot OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder employs a unique pop-up design to retain a pocketable overall size when not in use.
- Rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor employs a 180° tilting design to facilitate working from low angles or taking front-facing selfies, and this screen is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation as well as the ability to work with Touch Focus, Touch Pad AF, and Touch Shutter functions.
- A control ring surrounds the lens for directly and intuitively adjusting shooting settings, such as shutter speed and aperture, among others.
- Built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination when working in low-light conditions.
- The large right-hand grip offers increased comfort and support for longer shooting sessions.
- Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC lets you wirelessly share imagery to a smartphone or tablet for instant sharing online. This connectivity also lets you remotely control the camera from a mobile device. Additionally, Bluetooth connectivity also lets you embed your mobile device's location data to your images for geotagging.
- Included NP-BX1 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 370 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor, or 300 shots per charge when shooting with the electronic viewfinder.

Sony DSC-HX99 Reviews
Sony DSC-HX99
Great camera, but a big learning curve. I know that the more I use it I will like it more. After you buy this camera be sure to download the manual.
Good Compact Camera
I found that this is an all around great camera but being one of my subjects I photograph sadly the zoom was just not powerful enough like my previous Sony DSC HX80. Very hard to find a point and shoot now with that kind of powerful zoom without loosing clarity in the shot.
The best yet...
I have been using Sony Cyber-shot cameras for years and this is the best one yet. The earlier DSC was more rugged, but does not the reach the clarity of distant shots I got with the HX80 or the HX99. Adding the Sony cover to my HX99 toughens it up just enough without interfering with actions of the camera.
Powerful zoom!
Genuinely filled a need for me as a small 'on the road' cam to supplement my larger cams. When light is good and there is action, I love having this powerful zoom, RAW files and manual settings to capture anything in the moment! Have already captured many abstract landscapes in just the couple weeks of having this cam on me at all times. Viewfinder didn't work, - eye focus won't work.
Capable Point & Shoot
I already have a number of FF Sony cameras and lenses but wanted a more portable option and the HX99 fit the bill. Lots of features and specs at a reasonable price.
Great little point & shoot camera
This Sony DSC-HX99 is a great little point and shoot camera with an impressive zoom lens. It takes great wildlife and concert photos!
Outdated Tech
Had this Camera for nearly a month and have now returned it. Shot landscapes w/ it 6 times in varying light (but mostly great light). Cons: shadow detail (very bad even in perfect light..don't even think about using it in low light), soft images (you have to crank sharpness or pop just to make the images acceptable), inconsistent focus (even when you specify the focus area it's still not always in focus so I didn't have one shot confidence). I think maybe this camera was okay in 2018 but as for now...your cell phone camera will take a better overall image at comparable focal lengths. My advice is to save your money and wait for the next gen 1 inch sensor devices (if they ever come out).
Proper Expectations?
3 Stars - I recently owned a Sony RX100 vii and currently have a Pixel 7 phone. I miss my RX100 and regret selling it. Bought this little HX99 hoping it would produce a similar looking image (to the RX100 vii) but also give more range at a lesser cost. I was right in that it does produce a similar image as the RX100 vii but it's not quite as sharp and has bad shadow detail/low light performance. These things I fully expected and the shadows can be fixed pretty easily. What was a surprise is that it performs really bad at it's widest (24mm equiv). My Pixel 7 creates a far superior image at 24mm (and it's not close). That said if you're zooming way in at a far away subject (that's at least moderately well lit) then it will do what you expect. So I will still use my Pixel 7 for the wide shot and utilize the HX99 for the zoom shots my cell phone can't get. So you can't use this one as an all in one (like I could with the RX100 vii) but as a zoom only option yes. Overpriced for 2022 for sure.
